More like now you get 48 hours to think about how you have to come back and do it all again

Back on the hamster wheel, Sisyphus. That boulder ain't gonna move itself.

The essay concludes, "The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Yeah that's gonna be a no from me, dawg.

Bold of you to assume I only did 40 and that I’ll be allowed “days off”

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I've been there.

But it's the best part of your kids' week! Look at how happy they are.

I'm not complaining, I love my kids and I really don't think that being with them is the worst part of the week. I'm just very, very tired.

I have some very demanding cats, so I know exactly how you two feel

[–] snake 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yes, when you have kids the weekend is actually the worst part of the week!

[–] sheogorath 3 points 1 year ago

I consider myself very lucky because I have a good relationship with my in-laws so usually if I get really tired for the week and need to unwind on the weekend I just dump the kids at their gramps place and both parties will be happy.

I wouldn't say the worst, but definitely the hardest.

Well my boss left for the day so I have my mouse sitting on my jiggler and I’m watching Deep Space Nine on one of my iPads.

You're living the life

Idk how people do it. I've gotten so used to the job I have now where I work 40hrs on the weekends (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and I'm off all week. Sometimes the weeks still feel short

[–] AngryCommieKender 11 points 1 year ago (3 children)

How do you work 40 hours in 3 days?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

3 13 hour days....

[–] FFbob 7 points 1 year ago

I do 48 hours in 2 days every week. Bit more spread out, but still just 2 days of work.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

8 hours Friday, 2-10. Then 16 hours Saturday Sunday 6am-10pm

Direct support personal. I aid anyone with physical or mental disabilities

[–] grayman 4 points 1 year ago

I knew a lineman that did two 14s and a 12 every week.

[–] ummthatguy 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Actual productive time is maybe approaching 27-30 hours, tops.

[–] CADmonkey 12 points 1 year ago

Well look at this overachiever.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not truck drivers. That's 70 hours a week. 70 productive with 34 hours to reset and do it all again.

[–] jennwiththesea 0 points 1 year ago

😳 That is awful. You deserve better.

[–] blanketswithsmallpox 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

That's 3-4 days for me tyvm.

Downsides: rotating schedule, 10 hour days occasionally require working 5-6 days in a row pending when people take time off. We set it up so there are overlap on a schedule in the evening though, so you also have to work a abnormal shift ~4 times every two months.

I'd still prefer it over 8x5s. Those long weekends are glorious.

8x4s is what I'll be pressing for when I can.

3x12s for life 💪 God damn having a three day weekend every week is such a quality of life upgrade

A question for experts on Marxist theory.:

If work wasn't alienated, would people want to work more than 40 hours or be happy when working 40 hours?

Dimensions of alienated labor

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marx%27s_theory_of_alienation

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that if the labor isn't alienated, then it becomes less about the hours and more about what's accomplished.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

No need to be an expert.

When I'm working on a project that is mine and has my name on it, and I think that it'll help me or someone else in a meaningful way, I'll happily lose sleep over perfecting it.

When I'm just a cog in a giant faceless machine that wants only to maximize profits, I don't really care what the hell happens with the product as long as I get paid.
