Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

There is no reason to consider one's political party in local elections, if they are even a part of one, in local elections. Large social and economic issues simply do not matter for small positions such as city council or mayor. If you're part of a large city such as NYC then sure but the vast majority of us aren't. By the way, this only applies to the US because of our "wonderful" 2 party system.

Counterpoint: anyone who aligns themselves with the Republicans is objectively the wrong person to be in charge of anything.

That's your opinion. Don't become the Bible thumpers of politics. Everybody has a evolution given brain, let them choose

You make it sound like it's a crime to vote Republican. United States is not a one-party fascist state where you can only vote for the "one true party" Democrats

It's my opinion that someone who aligns themselves with the party, who's leader literally tried to start an insurrection, shouldn't be leading my local community.

They can put an I, a D, or any of the other letters of the alphabet next to their name. But if they stick an R next to their name, then they're clearly not holding same the values I do.

I'm not going to blindly support any one party, if the person with the D next to their name is no good, then I'm not voting for them either (I typically have to click the "No, please accept my incomplete ballot" check box when I file my ballot). When someone raises a giant red flag telling you who they are, then you don't need to dig any further into their policy to see what the rest of their platform is.

This might be the most incorrect thing I’ve read in weeks.

The only problem with that is politicians have to get their start somewhere, and many times that is an a local election. So you wind up giving that person a head start.

Republicans want to turn me into a government owned womb with no rights, I'm voting for Democrats so Republicans lose, it's that simple.

My opinion would be that people should not even be declaring a party when running for local offices.

But of course party can make a difference. Think of a sheriff that doesn't believe in gun control, or a supervisor that doesn't support low income housing.

@dan1101 Or a school board that wants to teach the "benefits" of slavery, or an antivaxxer that's in charge of the health department, or a city council that wants to run things "like a business" and winds up endangering citizens health by de-regulating environmental and water regulations to cut costs.

Where do you think non local politicians get their start?

[–] Hazdaz 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

FALSE.

Local elections matter. A vote for a Republican state representative might not mean you are helping the national Republican Party push through anti abortion laws, or pro-business laws, etc, but it does mean that on local laws your state might try to restrict access to abortion or give sweetheart deals to big corporations, etc.

Just look at the shit show that is Florida or Texas and you see why local elections matter. And matter a lot. That clown DeSatan wouldn't have been able to push through as much of his stupid ideas through if the Florida state legislature wasn't controlled by Republicans.

Obviously the more local, the less power these positions have, but if you run as a Republican in today's world, after seeing the shit that the GOP is willing to pull, tells me your mental capacity is greatly diminished and tells me you probably guzzle all the nonsense spewed out by right wing propaganda media like FOX. I wouldn't trust a Republican to be in charge of trash collection, quite honestly.

Well in that case I should just vote straight-ticket Republican. I've always voted a mix of Democrat and Republican on local levels (since I've always voted for the best person for the job), but clearly that's not wise if I want to achieve my political goals.

If you vote for any Republicans, that's speaks volumes to the kind of dipshit you are and the amount of corruption you are actively supporting. As an American, I say fuck off, treasonous scum.

Wow, a lot to unpack here. I will ignore the US centricity.

The idea that people and parties don't somehow interact and in part align is absurd. Besides that parties have working groups and experts for various topics, it is only a special brand of persons who think they can alone in their chamber create better outcome than if they would speak to affected people and experts.

Besides that being in a party means that you are part of a multi faction battle within the party, this means you can asses how a person acts and who they align with (same is true in regards to not being part of opponent parties).

Then plenty of city councils and mayors are quite relevant, even in the small a lot of decision can fuck some people over quite a bit. To further my point you have to deliver some data though, which region are you living in / which region are you talking about when you mean city councils / majors etc. don't matter.

Finally especially in the small big economic issues matter. However in many local elections the two parties lead to results that are bad for workers, marginalized etc. since the parties are right centrists and don't really care how to better the lives for those and how to keep our planet alive. Which would need a switch from the capitalist imperial hegemony we got now.

For more inspiration do go and talk with people from Rojava and read up on Jineology as example.
