News and information from Europe ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

As a Canadian, Iโ€™ll support you EU.

I just hope youโ€™ll support us too!

I'd love to see our ties grow stronger as a sane counterweight to the madness happening south of your border.

Hopefully not your tar sands

We do support Canada!

We'd love for you to join as the 28th EU state!

Wait, what do you mean "We are good just the way we are, sorry"? What if we gave you Greenland? (you can have the Suez canal too)

The last time Trump was in power I thought we should get much closer to the EU, potentially as a member

I look at Europe's worker protections and privacy protections as a model we all should follow.

Is Greenland in the EU, or is it a Danish territory that is explicitly outside the EU?

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Greenland is not in the EU because of the Fishing Quotas

Probably good though, Denmark pumps in 500.000.000โ‚ฌ per year for just 50.000 Inhabitants and it's still not really great to live there...

[email protected] for those who would like to subscribe the community.

Ah fuc*... I've searched for it, but probably I didn't get the results I wanted... sorry for the duplicate!

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Does it make sense to have two identical communities? There are duplicate posts already...

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No not really... I will postpone thinking about it to later this day (after sleeping)

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

I'd keep it. People can subscribe to both, and I often find myself looking for goods in EU stores (aka. not UK, sadly) so I don't have to pay ~30โ‚ฌ handling fee + tax. I know that OSS exists, but it's rarely apparent whether any given online store uses it.

I mean the UK isnt part of the EU and there are significant differences in law and trade stuff so its not a clear cut answer.

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Feddit.uk is not just used by brits

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but the community is called buyeuropean not buyEU

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This is true. [email protected] is for whole Europe and not just EU (the community logo is bit misleading atm).

It's of course ok to have a more EU specific community but I personally think Lemmy isn't big enough to have so much fragmentation and incredibly specific communities (yet).

But we can link to [email protected] from our community if OP decides that there is need for EU specific buy-community. Fediverse is free and both communities share the same goal: support closer economies!

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Lemmy Explorer is a great tool to see if a community already exists :)

Looks like a brexit trap

[โ€“] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Is this just for the EU or Europe in general?

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think Europe as a continent, but not limited to Europe only. I think nobody will raise their eyebrows if we buy Canadian...

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I think they mean like Norway and Switzerland
