This is a work in progress since I've never created my own community nor moderated one. Bare with me, but the goal is to create a reference community for data and sources. All logic all the time. While I get this built and you'd like to post something that seems on brand, then go right ahead. However, here are some starter rules

  1. No NSFW
  2. No bigotry (this is a coverall. I'm a stickler for phrasing, so choose your words carefully).
  3. Debate, don't debase
  4. It's another person on the other side of the screen. Golden Rule applies
  5. No bias unless it is part of the data and you remain neutral in any description you create.
  6. Citations are required.
  7. No insults (back-handed or otherwise).
  8. Curse/cuss/swear all you want, BUT curse to people. Not at them.
  9. Trolling, brigading, targeting, harassment will not be tolerated. ZERO tolerance
  10. None of us are perfect, so if your argument in a certain case comes to nothing, admit that. You'll get more respect and appreciation for learning something rather than rage quitting a discussion
  11. It's only me on the mod team so far, so please use best judgement to report things. That way, I can respond to the issues in a timely fashion

"The carnivore diet is a fad diet based on eating large amounts of animal fats and very little of anything else. I had assumed carnivore was exactly what it sounded like, and just a diet where you only ate meat. This is completely stupid.

Sick gainz.

Why wouldn't you stop though?

Man's extruding butter.

His liver was like: I'll just put this here for now.

The carnivore diet is a fad diet based on eating large amounts of animal fats and very little of anything else. The patient in this case reported eating nearly 10 pounds of butter, cheese and other fatty foods every day since embarking on the diet—even going so far as to add fat to the hamburgers he consumed daily.

Blood tests showed the patient's cholesterol was approximately four times normal levels. The doctors diagnosed the patient with xanthelasma, a condition in which yellowish deposits of cholesterol build up in various parts of the body—in this case, on the palms, the soles of his feet and his elbows. His case had progressed to the point that some of the cholesterol was pushing through cracks in the skin.

I saw some idiot on here a while ago saying his gf ate a pound of butter everyday and I thought it was insane...

But 10 pounds of fat a day?!

This guy is a fucking idiot, I get there's all types of misinformation about diet these days, but who could think that would be healthy?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This whole situation sounds like an episode out of The Simpsons. This guy is a real life Homer.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

No, Homer would never give up donuts.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

You're right, but he might pretend to give up donuts, eat 10lbs of dairy products and animal fat, then continue to sneak donuts at work.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What if the donuts were made out of meat?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

"Mmmm...meat donuts..."

That's a standard southerners diet

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

Shit, you get a house in the south, a Paula Deen cookbook appears if you don't already own one.

A pound of butter is just part of one meal. And then there's dessert. These people eat so much goddamn buttercake. I have had customers tell me they put butter on our pound cakes. Just straight butter.

maybe he tried to OD 😆

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I completely agree that this guy must be a rather slow thinker.

Why would he think the carnivore diet is only eating fat? It's kind of in the name.. You eat the meat and fat from animals.. like a carnivore would.

[–] givesomefucks 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

It's not a huge jump, we didn't evolve to just eat meat like cats did.

Like, you can "survive" on it for a long time, but eventually there's going to be a bunch of complications.

So they already believe one crazy thing that's popular enough to have communities, it shouldn't be shocking to see some go on to believe even crazier shit. It just keeps concentrating the crazy.

Same phenomenon that happens with lots of different groups, at least with this one they're only hurting themselves I guess.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

It is a huge jump. There's a whole bunch of animals (even mammals) that eat nothing but dead animal. Meat, fat and sometimes bones, aka carnivores..

There is not a single animal that lives purely on fat, so I have no clue why anyone would think that's a viable diet.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's more than that. You can absolutely survive indefinitely eating only animals, but you absolutely need to eat the viscera as well. Eating only the muscle, and none of the fat and organs, would leave you malnourished very quickly, and poison you with excess proteins.

source

Predators in the wild usually eat the viscera first.

hello,

your comment has been restored on lemmy.world, but i recommend avoiding to link to this website in future comments.

this website houses spam bots with drug ads that are still up now almost a year since we've first seen them there.

Someone doing a carnivore diet responded to my username in an unrelated thread and told me they were eating all the animals I wasn't. I guess to try and taunt me? Going on to say they were the healthiest they ever been and I was definitely a sick child.

I guess I feel own'd. I've been throughly own'd. Please continue own'ing. 😂

Just wait till your chlorophyll deposits start showing up, see who laughs then!

[–] WordBox 18 points 2 days ago

WHERE ARE YOUR CHOLESTEROL DEPOSITS!?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Someone's going for the "Labour of love" Darwin award for the dedication in terminating one self life in the worst possible way.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dude turned himself into beef tallow

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bet his eventual cremation will smell amazing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

i bet it'll burn down the crematorium.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago

I don't think I eat 10 pounds of food a day. I feel like if I ate 10 pounds of fatty foods a day, I would feel sick to my stomach all day.

Edit: I confused dezi with centi, so you need to multiply the density for blood with 10. So cholesterol levels were above 1% instead of above 10%, which makes much more sense.

Original post: Normal human blood has a density of around 10 g/dL (like water, which is the biggest part), so a cholesterol level above 1000 mg/dL (=1 g/dL) means more than 10% of the blood was cholesterol.

That is for sure not healthy when a value above 240 mg/dL already is in the dangerous category.

How the fuck did he not have a full artery blockage

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

As far as I have read LDL by itself doesn't block arteries. Arterial plaque, or calcification attracts LDL to help repair it - in a healthy individual LDL does many things, and repair is one of them -, but for people with advanced cardio vascular disease the "emergency equipment" might end up blocking the entire roadway.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago

Apparently partly because his body was secreting the cholesterol over his skin in the form of yellow stuff =D

But yeah, I have no idea how that guy was still able to walk. Maybe because it was so quickly happening that his heart hadn't yet withered due to the increased blood pressure?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

water's density is 100g/dl, not 10, so, not quite as severe as you said. the article said that the patient's cholesterol levels were roughly four times normal.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Argh, I confused dezi and centi, thanks for the correction!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

That's not a carnivore diet, that's a butter diet.
And practically no one is a carnivore.
They eat carrion (meat from animals that they didn't kill themselves).

[–] jaybone 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)
