Summary

The Taliban have banned Afghan women from training as nurses and midwives, sparking condemnation from human rights groups and international agencies.

Critics, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, warn the ban will devastate women’s healthcare in Afghanistan, where cultural norms already prohibit women from being treated by male doctors.

With maternal mortality rates among the highest globally and a shortage of 18,000 midwives, the ban risks worsening healthcare access for women, potentially leading to preventable deaths.

Afghan women have protested, calling the move a violation of their rights.

Truly a civilization trying to renew the Bronze Age, oh wait the Bronze Age actually had trained midwives and some female doctors.

Not that the actions of the Taliban ever "make sense," but doesn't having less trained midwives lead to a decrease in population caused by pregnancy complications? This is just additional cruelty to women with absolutely no benefit.

More women dying in childbirth = more men sat around in the dust with nothing but guns and Islam. What an existence..

Yes and yes. This is what fanaticism leads to.

I think Taliban Afghanistan will be the first civilization in history to not have midwives.

The Taliban is an outrageous act of ignorance.

Done purely just to punish women. What a horrid and backwards culture.

Afghan women have rights under taliban rule? This is truly sad to read. How many will die over this madness?

Do they even have male nurses? Who's going to take care of their soldiers?

Thoughts and prayers!

It's an old tradition in conservative circles.

I wish cave people would just find a suitable cave, and leave others alone.

Meanwhile, here in America, if you want to train to be a nurse your options are a lifetime of debt or risking your life joining the military.

We're definitely more civilized.
