Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. 3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

"If our overheating planet is a result of human greed, then it must be a special kind of greed, a kind that emerged puzzlingly late in the long history of our species and then with a sudden vengeance."

When are shitty editorials going to stop trying to blame billions of innocent people something that only a fraction of a fraction of the population has any control over?

As it stands, the only way for the overwhelming majority of people to make even a dent in the direction of climate change comes at a huge cost of personal comfort/ability and I'm not so quick to pass judgement on people for protecting what little creature comforts they're allowed to have in [current year].

It is hard to sacrifice one's own well-being for the greater good.

When we have the courage to shoot oil executives.

Never. The plan is delay, delay, delay, delay until it's too late and then go "Well, there's nothing we could have done anyway."

I've been following the arguments for decades now:

  1. Climate change is not happening.

  2. OK, climate change is happening, but there's no evidence it's caused by humans.

  3. OK, it is happening, and maybe it's caused by humans, but maybe it's something else.

  4. OK, it is happening, and it's definitely caused by humans, but it's too expensive to do anything about it, and people need jobs. <- You are here.

  5. OK, it is happening, it's caused by humans, and it's bad enough now that it's making it impossible for people to work without air conditioning, but really, the time to have done something was 30 to 50 years ago. (eta 2030 to 2050).

  6. OK, well, it's self perpetuating at this point, nothing to be done. Here, have some more oil, on us. (eta 2100).

It will stop through natural causes. Humans aren’t wired to collectively think on climate timescales.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yup, after 8 billion or so humans have died off.

And most of the animal species; that’s the sad part.

But it’s not like it will be the first time; dinosaurs weren’t known for thinking on climate timescales either.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

There isn’t an evolutionary advantage to thinking in those timescales, so no animal ever evolved them.

suddenly everyone got greedy

Yeah, just now. Not 500-2000 years ago with Pharos, Kings and Emperors. Humanity has always been greedy, and cruel.
