It's my impression that the ability for Instrospection is a rare trait in people as is Self-Criticism.
Not that I think Carl's dictum doesn't apply to those who have those traits: I just think it's harder for it to happen to them and it's easier (but not guaranteed) for them to spot that status of being captured by a belief in themselves and get out of it or at least try to work around it.
I am here to start a support group. Here are some things you might have been deceived on:
-Scientist and the science community have an agenda outside of: preforming science.
-Your religion is unique or special
-On that note, you are unique or special
-America is exceptional
-Government has the ability to solve every conflict
-Governement should solve every conflict
-Governement should exist exactly how it is now
-You will live long enough to explore the galaxy
-Everyone should want to have children and raise a family
-People in urban centers are different from people else where
The list goes on, feel free to add other common misconceptions.
The first step in treatment is learning you have a problem.
