US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday expressed strong concerns about China's support for Russia's defense industry and questioned Beijing's sincerity in seeking peace in Ukraine.

He met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.

"When Beijing says that, on the one hand, that it wants peace, it wants to see an end to the conflict, but on the other hand is allowing its companies to take actions that are actually helping Putin continue the aggression, that doesn't add up," Blinken said at a media briefing.

Beijing said it has not supplied Russia with weapons for use in Ukraine.

Blinken, however, said China has provided about 70% of machine tools and 90% of microelectronics that Moscow needs for military production, including rockets and armored vehicles.

This is the same Blinken that actively ignored investigations into Israel blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza and said everything was above board?

Yes, I know it's a separate conflict. But his actions there kinda make it hard to take much from him. These are probably valid accusations, but also: the US is providing weapons for use in Gaza.

This is an example of why erosion of public confidence in democratic institutions is a critical problem. We want to be able to follow an institutional opinion on this topic, but our trust has been eroded by another topic, which makes it less trustworthy.

Because people refuse to acknowledge that the US government is assisting a genocide. I believe that Blinken only knows China is full of shit because it's literally what the US is doing with the genocide.

My initial take was that first sentence lol then realized that context should be added. Its a complex issue that's hard to really put to a single comment.

You have a few user types:

  • if you say Israel is committing genocide you will get downvoted by mostly Zaionist. There are few here compare to reddit but still exist.
  • if you say US government is part of the genocide, you will get downvoted by mostly Zionist.
  • if you said Genocide Joe, or blamed the democrats for what is happening, you will get downvoted by democrats who will accuse you of being a russian shell because you want trump to win.
  • if you mention the hypocrisy of the statement made to support Ukraine and how they treat Palestinian you will get downvoted by European and being accuse of being a russian shell.
  • if you comment about history and how the US and Nato happy to prolong the war in Ukraine and how Nazis still exist or anything allude to how the US and its allies might be lying about Russia the same way the lied about all their enemies through out their history, you will get downvoted and label a tanki.

I upvoted because I agree but would also like to add that Russia is also committing genocide in Ukraine just to be fair.

You'll also get downvoted for calling them all out, but I'll upvote you because you are, right.

Or maybe lemmy went from 200-300k to 1.5m users in a year and the biggest instance love to dunk on ml, hexbear and lemmygrad.

Lol, I'm skeptical in general, but following the drama, I struggle to read these kinds of comments as something other than "Running with our tails in between our legs is dunking, if we say it enough times it'll be true!" I mean, .world literally has a Zionist bot in media bias fact checker that makes sure to ever so slightly move .world in a more fascist direction every day, .world and it's sub-instances like .ca have no legs to stand on.

Man lemmy.world is the weirdest I mean they’re pretty pro Palestine in a sense that it’s the consensus that Israel is committing genocide and is an apartheid state, but that not, I just don’t get it.

"When Beijing says that, on the one hand, that it wants peace, it wants to see an end to the conflict, but on the other hand is allowing its companies to take actions that are actually helping Putin continue the aggression, that doesn't add up," Blinken said at a media briefing.

"Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go call for a ceasefire in the Middle East while we continue to supply Israel with weapons."

Don't forget the Chinese golf carts they use to send their soldiers to their death.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 23 hours ago

I mean, it's probably a good thing China is sending those. They're very easy to hit.

[–] Burn_The_Right 3 points 1 day ago

Fun fact: It takes a Russian soldier an average of 4.5 hours to remove all of the cellophane from one Chinese golf cart.

I really hope there is more gamesmanship going on behind the scenes at his office than 'this doesn't add up'. But I'm a little skeptical because just game this thing out:

The west claims to 100% support Ukraine yet so far have only done enough to be sure they can stay in the fight. Not enough to outright win. What do outside observers do with that info? If I was China I would absolutely see this as hesitation on the part of the west and recognize that until the west actually does go all in, this will be a source of instability that I can build on to increase my influence in the world. So of course I'm going to play both sides as much as I can get away with, at least until there's a indication that the west's stance on this is changing.

Not to mention they watched this play out over 3 years. Even without the goal of influence, they just watched the US profiteer on dated NATO surplus sold to Ukraine.
