If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

From WildCareOklahoma

Meet WildCareOklahoma patient #24-3218, great horned owl. This is not a typical position for an owl. This one is being weighed. Taking and tracking patient weights is one of the most important protocols followed at WildCareOklahoma. Changes and trends in weight can indicate the patient is improving and moving toward release or that something may be wrong when weight is lost.

You may recognize this scale - it's the same kind used in pediatricians' offices!

said the great horned owl

ok - i have to start working, this friday is killing me

Edit: just saw that the ASCII will not be shown correctly in some Lemmy clients .... Only in the Browser

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I looked in the browser, it looks very nice!

[–] anon6789 4 points 4 months ago

Agreed, worth opening a browser window to see!

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (2 children)

This owl wants some belly rubs. I'm absolutely sure.

Edit: Is the scale set to lb or kg? I need to know how much anger and potential revenge we are dealing with here.

[–] anon6789 20 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Just know those feet can grip with more force than a pitbull's jaws before sticking your fingers there! 😜

[–] kamenlady 10 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Best to say bye bye to the fingers, just in case

[–] anon6789 10 points 4 months ago

That's why we're given ten!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Not to burst your bubble but belly rubs for most birds is a sexual thing. Best not to do it unless you want a horny bird.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Not sure which is worse, pointy talons in the flesh or a horny bird. No belly rubs. For now.

[–] anon6789 6 points 4 months ago

Owl sex is pretty violent, so there's not sure there's too much difference for ya...

[–] anon6789 12 points 4 months ago

I'm going to venture to say it's kg. A Great Horned Owl weighs between 2-4 pounds.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 months ago (2 children)

She does not seem thrilled.

[–] anon6789 11 points 4 months ago (2 children)

Do any of us enjoy when someone weighs us? 😅

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Depends on my shape. Hers seems to be wonderfull and fluffy, so...

[–] anon6789 5 points 4 months ago

Sucking in those feathers makes a dramatic difference.

This is the one she really didnt want you to see:

(different bird, but you get the idea)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

And there's my first laugh this morning! Thanks!

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Always glad to come through for you!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

You're so delightful to have in my feed. I really appreciate you.

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I've been really appreciative of you guys lately too. I've kinda been down for the last few weeks, but I've always looked forward to sharing owl stuff with you guys.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through stuff. I hope it improves soon and you are the better, after. It's good to have people, places and hobbies to brighten cloudy days, and I'm glad we can be part of that, for each other. If there's anything we can do, even just be a sounding board, please don't hesitate to share. Maybe we can find solutions, maybe not; but we can be supportive, either way. Not saying you want to or that it's always appropriate to put our stuff online; just that sometimes it can lighten the load.

Either way, we're here for you. Thanks again.

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I appreciate the moral support! I believe it's mainly due to changes to my routine throwing off my sleep. I don't sleep enough to begin with, so it doesn't take much to really get me out of whack.

I've been making sure to have it with my friends and my piano class is back for the fall semester now too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Very welcome, friend. Yes, having sleep messed up can do that, and days are getting shorter, so that can contribute. I'm glad you have friends and hobbies to alleviate the brunt. Playing an instrument is a wonderful outlet. Perhaps you'll write a fugue on par with ~~Beethoven~~ Bach. I need a nap!

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

That fellow could fugue like none other!

Alas, I am not at fugue levels of coordination yet, but I'll keep working on it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm not at any level on any instrument. You'll get there! Here's some inspiration!

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I think something happened to that link.

I was just joking to myself that I'm always at least a little better at it than I was yesterday.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Apparently it did, it looked right when I pasted it. Here you go: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CGVL5j6BEKs

[–] anon6789 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I'm always much more jealous of how relaxed they are playing, rather than the notes per second. This guy plays that as calmly as if he were sending someone a text, while I'm over here feeling like I'm defusing a bomb or doing heart surgery trying to poke the right things.

I am far enough along now that I thankfully am able to notice my own improvement after being on the plateau for a while, which helps much more than a year ago when I started and had no clue if what I was doing was right or not.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

His hand structure is a plus, but there's no denying his talent. He probably practiced a lot to get there. I was almost drifting off to it, then the phone rang. D'oh! And yes, it's odd I was drifting off to it, but I seriously could've used that nap!

[–] homesweethomeMrL 6 points 4 months ago

“How long do I got, doc?”

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Is there a talon missing on the left foot, or is it just an odd camera angle?

[–] anon6789 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Good eye. I noticed that this morning as well. That'd be something I think they would have commented on, as those feet are critical to their survival.

I did a quick and dirty Zoom and Enhance and now you can see it. It's just under some belly floof. You can see the grippy texture on the underside of the foot now as well, so that's a bonus!

[–] kamenlady 4 points 4 months ago

It's just under some belly floof.

The place i would like to be now, after a long day of work lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] anon6789 4 points 4 months ago

That's a quality weights and measures joke right here! 😆

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] anon6789 3 points 4 months ago

If you can fit it on a baby scale, then it's gotta be a baby. It's not a baby and whatever else you feel like, perhaps an owl, why not, let's be a little ridiculous scale. We live in a civil society, people dont just stick whatever they find in places babies are supposed to go.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] anon6789 6 points 4 months ago

It's like a baby with feathers!

[–] bi_tux 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I always assumed they weigh like 2.5kg for some reason

[–] Klear 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There's a tiny little bird hidden under a lot of nearly immaterial fluff.

[–] anon6789 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Yup, owls are about 40-60% air by volume. You really don't get your money's worth with owls.

They are the hollow chocolate bunny of the animal kingdom.

[–] kamenlady 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

I always thought this pic was fake

Now take away the floof from the top and you have an almost human shaped owl running around.

[–] anon6789 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

There really is not much to an owl...

[–] kamenlady 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)
[–] anon6789 3 points 4 months ago

Bubo is in a category all of his own!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

Owl be weighting for you right here.
