A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts: 1

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
    • If you feel strongly that you want politics back, please volunteer as a mod.
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Have you seen an organ? It’s basically several keyboards stacked on top of each other, including a single-octave one for your feet.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Now imagine that, but stack a set of drums on top. Maybe even add 2 additional legs while we're at it!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

Can you imagine, that guy from Mortal Combat would have 8 arms!

The main character of the The Hydrogen Sonata by Ian Banks features an alien that had modified themselves with an extra set of arms so that she could play a crazy double necked cello.

Looked for this comment and was not disappointed. The Antagonistic Undecagonstring ❤️ (I just finished the book a second time)

[–] kholby 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Like the Antagonistic Undecagonstring?

[–] 3DKungFu 3 points 2 years ago

I clicked hoping to see a Hydrogen Sonata reference and was not disappointed.

Or we could just keep playing the piano

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (2 children)

If humans had 4 arms we'd need 8 pants pockets! We're going to need bigger butts along with the arms to accommodate all of those pockets.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

If be willing bet that if we did have four arms, women still wouldn't have dress pockets.

[–] Divinitous 3 points 2 years ago

We're working on the butt part already.

Meanwhile, I can’t find the brainpower to play an instrument and form words at the same time. I pretty much end up drooling on myself.

[–] Ensign_Crab 4 points 2 years ago

We'd also be forewarned.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

the skin flute would be even more popular!

Yeah, with electronic help, like a looping device or just recording different tracks one after another, you can obviously do amazing things, but you end up lacking a lot of flexibility to quickly improvise or adjust yourself to what's happening in the other voices.

Having said that, in an orchestra, you don't really want most of the instruments to go wild, so simple instruments would still be a thing. Even today, there's lots of instruments where one hand just holds the instrument.
I guess, with 4 arms, you could attempt to play two violins at the same time, though.

[–] Transcendant 2 points 2 years ago

To take it further, if humans had 4 arms, our heads would be a different shape, because we'd need more brain to control them. AFAIK that would mean a bigger back of head (cerebellum) and a bigger forehead (frontal lobe).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

We may not have 4 arms but we do have whatever this is https://youtu.be/ywrK1yTYRIA

Imagine a one-man band, except he's two bands.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

IMO: currently the best one man band is Shakey Graves... check his video.

I think Shakey Graves is good, but I think Steel Beans encompasses one-man band even better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=louAX5OPPtI

His original stuff is cool too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFJJ-aYsGl4
