So an interesting average of 1.75 convictions per person.
The population of Maryland is 6.165 million. 100k people is 1.6% of the state's population.
That seems insane.
America has had a gulag system in place since the Civil War. When the Civil Rights Act finally came through, conservatives needed a new way to criminalize being black.
Jaywalking is another way
On the other hand, 0.7% of the U.S. population is in prison right now, so that actually sounds low if anything. Disturbing, but it does sound low.
We are just like Russia for the most imprisoned and used as slaves 13th.
The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with nearly two million people in prison at any given time. In 2023, the US had 531 prisoners per 100,000 people, which is more than any other country. The US has held this title since 2002.
