I did not delete Jimmy Corsetti's username because he's a notable public kook who has been on Rogan at least once.

Can’t beat Miniminutemen for quick refutation on whatever crazy archeological pseudo bunk comes out every day.

https://youtube.com/shorts/ywf9m8a5A5A

Some other videos of his such as the pseudoscience pipeline https://youtube.com/shorts/9vMBYfW8olU

He has to constantly refute these crazy things and this particular one is so pervasive he’s made an entire video about it.

Milo Rossi is a treasure. His deep dive into everything that was wrong in Hancock's Netflix show is amazing.

He’s one of my favorites for disputing misinformation along with Captain Disillusioned

I believe at GT archeologists are deliberately leaving sections untouched so that future archaeologists, with better technologies, can use improved techniques. Imagine if the tombs discovered in Egypt in the 1800s hadn’t been destroyed by “primitive” approaches to archeology. But no, it’s a conspiracy.

[–] FlyingSquid 31 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That's very much the case. And even now, there are many technologies such as lidar and magnetometry that can uncover a huge amount of information about a site.

Nothing, at this point, can replace what is learned by just getting on your knees with a trowel, but between a lack of funding and the knowledge that digging a site is inherently destructive, it's usually restricted to small test pits these days rather than huge trenches like people have seen in the past.

Human remains are also generally treated with far more respect now than they used to be. They are often re-interred where they are found after study if they are ever removed in the first place. In areas where indigenous people are around and find those burials to be sacred, archaeology is almost always only done with their permission and supervision now. The field has gone through a big revolution in terms of ethics and all for the better.

But, of course, people think "we shouldn't just plow through layers like Schliemann did at Troy and make long-term and very careful plans about where and when we dig" means that there's some sort of conspiracy.

Would it be nice to just dig up every single thing on the hill of Göbekli Tepe? Sure. But in order to do that, you would have to destroy any archaeology that lays on top of other archaeology, meaning you just lose valuable information as you make your way to the bottom, so it would be bad science.

Part of the problem is that people who don't really know much about the field of archaeology think that a cool-looking artifact can teach us more than a wall course or a tiny pot sherd and that's just not true.

Part of the problem is that people who don't really know much about anything think that a whole wide arraiof scientific fields are super easy and those PhD losers just never read those perfect Facebook posts of that really smart lone wolf who saw trhough conspiracy #4664329

Asshats like Infowars guy just are there to add fuel to that fire

It was and is like e this with Covid ans climate change as well, to name a few

Archeologists already have to deal with all kinds of bullshit to just do their freaking job of safeguarding human history and these assholes are railing weirdos and crazies against them. Fuck them.

I assume the free part of freethinking is freedom from rationality

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Exactly. Freedom from anyone telling you what to think, even if that "anyone" is basic logic and incontrovertibly proven facts.

[–] athairmor 8 points 5 months ago

Freedom from reality, too.

There weren’t any ancient civilisations basically before the Holocene, which is pretty much because agriculture wasn’t a thing yet. Before the Holocene the climate was more unstable (and colder). I’ve always wondered why that is: why did the climate system stabilise around 12000 years ago?

Then earlier this week this dropped: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-024-02279-8

So fascinating. We are still figuring it out. Reality is more interesting than the BS peddled by Corsetti and Hancock et al, if you ask me.

I understood that reference.

What do they mean free gobekli tepe? Who colonised gobekli tepe? Are they talking about freeing it to its owners from 4000 years ago?

[–] FlyingSquid 13 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

They believe there is a conspiracy to hide things there because the digging they are doing now has been minimized to protect the site from further damage.

Edit: The funny thing is that Karahan Tepe is probably significantly older, but they don't ever talk about it in their conspiracy theories.

[–] ObamaBinLaden 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Do you know what things they could be trying to hide? This isn't the Noah's ark region from what limited conspiracy knowledge I have.

[–] FlyingSquid 7 points 5 months ago

Oh, but there's still evidence of the "great flood" because they claim there's evidence of that everywhere. But I don't think Corsetti is a creationist. He's one of the people whose concepts have descended from the extremely racist ideas of Madame Blavatsky (I'm not suggesting Corsetti is a racist, I'm saying that's where it all comes from) of an advanced civilization- often suggested to be Atlantis- that birthed every single ancient civilization after it collapsed regardless of the fact that the civilizations they claim all originated with Atlantis sometimes existed thousands of years apart.

As to why they are trying to hide it? According to Graham Hancock, who also peddles this nonsense, it's because the Archaeological establishment will all be embarrassed by being proven wrong. I don't pay enough attention to Corsetti's nonsense to know what his spurious reasoning is.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 months ago

I read the last line as gobbledygook.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 months ago

With all the nonsense that there is in the world why this particular nonsense? Lemme tell ya: friend of mine showed me a graph showing that we had historically low levels of CO~2~. Took me a while to catch on but it didn't have the Holocene individually marked, it was mostly concerning the epochs before mankind arrived. So the argument is totally irrelevant to the discussion of greenhouse gasses. Unless... unless you could convince yourself that there were lost civilisations that existed in distant pre-history. Of course there's absolutely zero evidence for these... must be a cover-up.

Anyone who pays for Twitter wants to look like an idiot and have their name boosted.

[–] FlyingSquid 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

That's not especially revealing when it comes to Corsetti since he's been able to peddle his pseudocience onto shows like Rogan's.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen 4 points 5 months ago

Oh for sure, but even if you know next to nothing about him, one can tell in an instant.
