Leaks suggest Apple's iPhone 16 will have record-thin bezels, potentially dethroning Samsung.

Announcements like this just remind me that new phones have become phenomenally uninteresting.

It's cool. We still haven't brought back the headphone jack and we're too cheap to include a memory card slot. "Courage."

There are a few phones that still do a headphone jack and expandable storage but they definitely aren't the big flagship brands if that's what you are looking for.

Heck, Moondrop a predominantly audio gear manufacturer, just launched a phone specifically for audiophiles and it has a 3.5mm/4.4mm headphone jack combo. I don't think its quite as modern in the other aspects but hey, it has the unicorn features we don't see nearly as often!

FYI Sony phones have both audio jack and microSD slot throughout their whole range.

[–] TheGrandNagus 2 points 5 months ago

Respect to Sony for that. As one of the biggest sellers of Bluetooth audio equipment, they're one of the ones that would gain most from nobody being able to use 3.5mm

They’re too cheap to even include a SIM card slot

I've been Pixel/Nexus for forever but got over it when Pixel dropped it. Buy a dongle for your headphones.

I'm even over the lack of sd. If I really need it, I can plug it in with a dongle.

Oh my fucking god nobody cares. Call me when you finally can install apps outside that stupid store like any other normal computer, phone or not.

Agree. I have an S23 and I don't want thinner bezels. It's already at the goldilocks spot for me. Thinner wouldn't be better.

My pixel already has thin enough bezels that when I use it without a case, which I never do because it's a bar of soap, my palm often touches while my thumb does when I use it 1 handed. How about more repairability instead of less?

You know, I was using my iphone 15 the other day and was extraordinarily bothered by its thicc bezels. Thank god apple is innovating solutions for problems like these.

You know, even as a lifelong technology nerd I have never actually meaningfully given a fuck about the thickness or lack thereof of any device's bezels. What a worthless thing to get worked up about.

As a matter of fact, this can be (and has been) taken so far that it actually becomes a functional detriment. For instance, on the Moto G Power I just bought the touchable areas of the screen are so close to the physical edges and corners of the device that I frequently find the heel of my hand taps the shift key on the on screen keyboard unintentionally. It's actually rather annoying.

I think the way the old Sharp Aquos Crystal did it is probably the best way if you absolutely must have maniacally tiny bezels to put as a bullet point on the spec sheet -- That phone had basically no bezels top, left, and right but had a deliberate chin on the bottom to not only house the microphone and stereo speakers and front camera and all, but also give you a place to hold the damn thing.

[–] dezmd 2 points 5 months ago

I still want a Sharp Zaurus as a phone, slide down keyboard and all.

[–] TheFeatureCreature 20 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Why would I want a phone that's even harder to hold?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Apple: "Hold my beer"

But seriously, I still haven't forgiven them for moving the sleep/wake button from the logical location where it was on the top, to the upper right side, the ONE place on the phone that guarantees you will be hitting it accidentally the maximum number of times.

Who the fuck cares?

"Back in my day, Johnny, the bezels were slightly thicker. Truly we are living in a golden age!"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Maybe it's just me but I prefer bezels, like the Sony phones still have a nice border and no front camera cut out.

[–] TheGrandNagus 3 points 5 months ago

And stereo front speakers, IIRC

OK I must admit that since they can make the screens with curved edges, I'd have thought they could make them near zero bezel, I wonder why they cant?

Mine is flat and has a 2mm bezel, and about 0.6mm frame, I've never considered that a problem, it helps prevent accidental touches on your screen when holding the phone.

I guess they need to try to push every single thing that can be pushed, to sell new phones.

Curved screens are often significantly harder (and more expensive, even at independent shops) to replace than standard flat screens.
