How about the 3.75 hours essay of the causes of Mario 64 invisible walls?

[-] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

That hit my timeline the other day. The amount of work that has been put into that video must have been insane.

[-] NorthWestWind 9 points 1 month ago

Pannen did mention he spent the past 10 months on that video

[-] Odo 7 points 1 month ago

I have that exact video paused right now. So detailed and fascinating. I love that he added moments of speedrunners hitting many of them.

[-] NorthWestWind 8 points 1 month ago

The funniest speedrunner clip was definitely the one where they accidentally clipped out of bounds and died in Snowman's Land

The fustercluck of comedic timing and ever more infuriating bad luck culminating in righteous anger and bewilderment at the absurdity of dying instantly to nothing is the most beautiful thing to grace my screen this year.

That kind of luck has got to be a once in a decade thing.

Currently been watching it in parts!

Get you a friend/partner who is actively excited to learn about niche interests. 🥰

I had a friend like that but then his girlfriend hated me so we don't talk anymore haha boo

This comic came to mind when I was watching that video the other day. But it's not full 4 hours, it's about Mario 64 not Mario Kart and it's only tangentially related to speedrunning, so in your face, last place comics!

Wait what video? I would legit watch this, very fond memories as a kid playing Deus Ex after finding it at a thrift shop for $1 the year after it came out.

Hbomberguy has a 3,5 hours one about why Deus ex human revolution is okish and the original great. So spoiler for human revolution, but if you played both it will definitely scratch that itch:

TL;Dr Human Revolution was clearly unfinished and it's both pretty obvious and fairly disappointing.

The final product is fun, but you can tell it was supposed to be something bigger.

I do also love YourFavoriteSon's 3hr20 retrospective on the whole series, Gingy's 2h18 story breakdown of the series as well as NeverKnowBest's 2h10 retrospective on the whole series!

(Love a good long-form video essay on videogames lol)

Warlockracy has a 2.5 hour video on the original game, and another hour long video on a fan made sequel using the original engine.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 month ago

I think I've seen the video he's referring to. It was good background noise for when I explored the underworld in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (took ages!)

In terms of video game essayist, I just want to throw out this criminally underrated creator named Timmm

The production value is, imo, absolutely unmatched. He has fewer than 50k subs and I really don’t care the topic he picks, I’m going to be fully submersed in it.

But do they have a video about Deus Ex?

[-] amorpheus 1 points 1 month ago

Doesn't look like it.

Hbomberguy did a 3h+ video on Deus ex a couple of years ago, I think I remember it being pretty good

[-] manmachine 9 points 1 month ago

Not exactly 3.5 hours, but I very much recommend Ross Scott's take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxOKEsBx4NU
