I know many other seasoned Star Trek fans out there have probably experienced this one many times before. But I just watched this episode for the first time and the writing, acting and story just blew me away. So far it is by far one of my favourite scenes and episodes of the series so far. The dialogue between Bashir and Garak at end the of the episode is a classic.

I don't like giving too many details ... all you Star Trek pros already know what this episode leads up to. For those who don't, or haven't watched it yet, it is completely amazing episode to watch just for the writing and acting alone.

This is the first time I've been able to watch DS9 from beginning to end and although I'm still in Season Two, I'm completely loving it. So much of the conflict and complexities of war and its aftermath are still very relevant today and its amazing to see. Then they give you a breath outside of the politics and give you interactions like this with Garak and Bashir and I find it completely enthralling.

I know this may be kind of a fan favourite that's probably been stated many times before .... I was just so happy to see it that I had to share my enthusiasm.

My dear friend, they're all fan favorites.

"Even Move Along Home?"

Especially Move Along Home.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 6 months ago

I even felt like Garak was speaking this to me ... nicely done ... you're definitely a Cardassian I would share a meal with in the promenade

I must be in the minority... I don't mind "Move Along Home". Not my favourite, of course, but an enjoyable (if somewhat absurd) way to pass the time. Plus it proves Quark has a conscience.

Another recent DS9 episode that really surprised me was ... S2 E21 - The Maquis, Part 2

This one really reflected the mentality that we are living in now where everyone only wants to understand war and fighting at all costs.

The clincher was Quark's speech on the economics of peace ... a truly amazing piece of writing and logic for any universe or reality.

"They have weapons, you have weapons – everyone has weapons, but right now, no one has a clear advantage! So the price of peace is at an all-time low. This is the perfect time to sit down and hammer out an agreement. Don't you get it? Attacking the Cardassians now will only make peace more expensive in the long run! Now, I ask you, is that logical?"

In our day in age when war is happening for no clear apparent reason ... let alone for it to continue to escalate .. the cost for peace only grows more expensive and intolerable the longer we wait.

DS9 quickly became my favorite Star Trek, the story is awesome and the character development is fun to see. It made me tear up more than once. I have the last ~6 episodes to watch still but I'm sad to let the series go, so I've been procrastinating about watching them.

Agree.

Yes I'm self-sealing.

I'm a bit late to this post, but if you haven't seen in, a group did an up-scaled restoration of DS9, and it looks amazing:
https://ds9redefined.wordpress.com/

It's 340GB for the complete series, so be prepared if you want to go that direction.

Looks like there’s no way to actually download it?

edit to add: Seems it has recently shown up at my favorite port on the high seas. Torrents are much faster.

Download instructions are kept on Discord (sigh): https://discord.gg/dYC5NKuS

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don’t have that app. Can’t it be put on a regular webpage?

[–] negativenull 5 points 6 months ago (4 children)

I don't think they want it too available. It's not a blessed project by Paramount.

I'll DM you the steps

Thanks!

This new walled garden app hellscape is too much.

[–] negativenull 2 points 6 months ago

Agreed totally

If you wouldn’t mind sending me a PM as well, it would be appreciated. It’s about time for my yearly DS9 rewatch.

On a full rewatch, but only about halfway through season 2. Really looking forward to getting back to that one. On the whole, it's great getting to see the slow burn of each character develop. Not to mention the early makeup/voice work. Epecially Odo.

I've always wanted to watch the series ... but it's hard to find the time and some weeks I go days without watching an episode and other times I binge on two or three. I knew it was good but I'm fully appreciating all the subtle connections the writers were trying to make to the conflicts and complications of the world at the time .... it's funny because all those same complications are still the same today.

[–] Jarix 6 points 6 months ago

Take your time and savour it. Dont worry about getting through it super fast. Take your time. Hell it came out one episode a week for like 6 months at a time. If you get through a few episodes a week you are still getting through it in a hurry

[–] ummthatguy 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Ah, the cyclical struggles of "modern" life. We're at a point of understanding that we should all be better off, but it requires the collective cooperation of labor and "management" with the goal of everyone's benefit. Even with energy limitations presumably eliminated, our imagined far future still depicts many of the same conflicts.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

The speed of our technical ability will always outpace our monkey brains. We may have been capable of advancing our technical knowledge by leaps and bounds over the past hundred years but our minds, our brains and our ways of thinking is only able to evolve at the pace of tens of thousands of years at a time. I keep reminding my friends when we talk about modern problems and why we aren't capable of solving them that we humans are only a small step out of the cave we emerged from 40,000 years ago.

A Brief Disagreement

[–] ummthatguy 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If it was you or whoever that posted that some months ago, I love that short to no end! As for humanity at present and further forward, I'm reminded of the scene from ENT concerning the Vulcan's confoundment over our progress VS our temperament.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Enterprise is the next series on my list but I think it will be a while before I get there.

It was probably me that shared that video because I had just recently discovered the cartoonist and his Youtube Channel ... Steve Cutts is a genius as far as I'm concerned because he really does describe our civilization in the greatest ways ... he holds a mirror that we should all look at and think long and hard about what we see.

MAN

His Youtube channel and his work is full of great content

[–] ummthatguy 2 points 6 months ago

Welp, thanks for the new source of content! In such a succinct short are we put on display. Also, he's clearly fond of Idiocracy and how increasingly prescient it may be.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I haven't seen this episode (or a lot of DS9 for that matter) so no spoilers please. Is the title a nod to the series The Wire?

[–] Flyguy2000 8 points 6 months ago

Not likely, since DS9 aired ~9 years before The Wire.
