Have been trying to tell my coworkers this for two years now. We had a manager tell her whole department "I'll fire and black list whoever I want." I can't blame them when you'd use the apostrophe if it were a personal name instead of a personal pronoun. "It's" used to be the standard form for the possessive neuter actually, now it's considered nonstandard but it's non "incorrect" by any means
