I mean duh? Search engines used to be an incredibly powerful tool, now they link nothing but "top ten x to buy in 2024" lists that are filled with ads and likely get a portion of sales through links.

Top Ten Search Engines to Use in 2024 Other Than Google.

The issue is they are all trying to be Google so they are all trash and the only differentiator that I'm aware of is Kagi which costs money and is too new to know if it can survive enshitification.

Google did this to themselves, they're prioritizing quick profits over everything else. Including your search, it sometimes doesn't even search for what you typed but instead for a similar prompt that contains more ads.

I've been on yahoo for about a year now. It takes a bit to get used to he slightly different search prompts, but it works a lot better.

Google used to to try to "get you off of google ASAP", to wherever you wanted to go. Yahoo still does this, it has the same backend that feeds the bing AI, but you can disable the ad ridden homepage.

Isn't yahoo just a Bing overlay now?

Should we blame all the counter algorithms that attempt to game the results towards certain content providers, or the growing base of shitty content designed to garner eyeballs versus having any substance?

Or should we blame Google because it's their page ranking these sites are trying to game?

Ultimately, it seems like an algorithmic arms race with both sides vying to maximise as/affiliate revenue at the expense of the human users.
