I'm in the same boat as you. First thing I recommend is getting an app for it (I'm using connect, and loving it). Then just going through 'all' and subbing to what you like, and blocking what you don't. It'll take a while to curate it to your liking, but so did reddit.
News and Discussions about Reddit

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:
Rules

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.
Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.
**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **
Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.
Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.
Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.
That's it.
Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.
Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.
Rule 6- Regarding META posts.
Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.
Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.
If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.
Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.
Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.
Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.
Let everyone have their own content.
:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.
I've got Jerboa on Android but it's the same experience from the website. Find the community search and just type something in. You'll see multiple instances of the same topic. I just subbed to every single one. I also chose an instance that didn't block any other instance. Some instances attract certain kinds of people and then instances start blocking each other. So I chose one that didn't block anything because I want that choice for myself.
That's fair. I don't fully understand the whole "instance" thing, but I've heard some block more than others.
A lot of people use the email analogy. So, there's a different instances with different names. Each instance has communities like "[email protected]" and "[email protected]". My account is on another instance from those two, but I can see communities from all other instances. Unless their instance blocked mine, at which point their users cannot interact with me, and I can't see their posts.
So, if you're looking for "news", you can look up that work in the community search and sub to multiple ones. The down side is you'll often see duplicate posts. I hope they figure out a way to combine posts. But idk how they could automate that process without it becoming a shitshow. The up side is that if lemmy.world goes down, you can still access the rest of the "federation". Unless your account was on the instance that went down. That's another thing I wish could be solved.
So basically, this is the equivalent of multiple smaller versions of reddit coming together to be a viable replacement?
Yeah, basically. It'll be interesting to see how this develops.
Connect has been a great app and I feel like it doesn't get the love it deserves.
Try checking out sub.rehab which includes many official subreddits’ Lemmy communities. Remember, this is the fediverse, so evein if the community is on kbin (they call them magazines over there), Mastodon, Beehaw, etc - they can all be followed from your Lemmy account!
Install Voyager app. Go to settings > Migrate Reddit and follow the instructions there. It’ll have you go to your Reddit account, copy a multireddit link which will then allow you to search if there’s communities here in the same name.
Vger.app > Settings > Install App [email protected]
Welcome to the Fediverse!
For apps, here's a useful list:
For discovering instances:
If you subscribe to a few communities, start watching the posters. Find a few posters you like, click through to their profile and see what other communities they follow for ideas.
I would recommend going to the 'communities' tab and sorting by 'local'. Then go through the list and get to know the communities already hosted on this instance (server). I'm still pretty new myself but I have already seen more than a handful of threads about this drama or that drama coming off of other servers. If you think you are going to stick to this one, get to know the community here first and then go exploring communities on other servers.
Take a look at https://lemm.ee/post/224890 . The poster's keeping a list of crafting-related ~~subreddits~~ communities.
