Sellsword is another name for mercenary. Someone whose sword is for sale, as in they fight for pay.

In Witcher 3, there is a merchant with the voice line "top notch swords!" when you start a dialogue with him. He only sells armor, IIRC. It was rather tedious to hear him lie every time I made a purchase.
