News and Discussions about Reddit

Welcome to !reddit. This is a community for all news and discussions about Reddit.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules

Rule 1- No brigading.

**You may not encourage brigading any communities or subreddits in any way. **

YSKs are about self-improvement on how to do things.

Rule 2- No illegal or NSFW or gore content.

**No illegal or NSFW or gore content. **

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-Reddit posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

:::spoiler Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

I loaded a page on reddit due to a search result and found out that I'm among the chosen few. Message sent yesterday. They must've gotten fewer takers than expected on the first round of invites if they're now offering shares to people who haven't posted, commented, voted, or done anything else on the site for the past 8 months.

This round was anyone with more than 25K karma. I haven’t touched my account since the API fiasco last year and I got the email too.

one time I was trying to see how good I am at gaming the system, and scored 25k in two days with a throwaway account and a bunch of strategically placed comments, and I know there are people even better at it than I am. looks like they're getting desperate.

They are definitely scraping the barrel. I got one. Meanwhile, my account was wiped of comments (and a lot of my comments were very anti-reddit and/or pro-fediverse). The account has been dormant for several months. I had fairly high karma, but mostly from 2 or 3 dumb/funny memes that the hivemind loved for whatever arbitrary reason of timing/ subreddit.

Reddit always had a weird vibe / momentum to the votes. Say the dumb thing in a fan service way and they eat it up. Gallowboob was the master manipulator, but it wasn't overly difficult to get lucky and pick up 10k to 20k upvotes with a single well-timed pithy remark or predictable joke.

Also, if a comment got early down-votes it tended to keep going in that direction, even if the comment was adding to the discussion. Simple momentum, even with vote fuzzing in play. Occasionally you'd see one bounce back up if others called out the BS of the down-votes.

I'm grateful Lemmy doesn't aggregate karma. Keep posts and comments self-contained. Fresh start on every new thread!

I also got the message yesterday. It seemed desperate. I blocked the user.

Sounds like the IPO is not going as well as expected lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don't really know what the fuck they expected, when they announced the ipo and then disclosed "Oh btw we don't make any money and never have, also our users can literally shut our entire site down at a moment's notice"

[–] MrJameGumb 4 points 9 months ago

There's that and the fact that almost every time Reddit is mentioned in the news now it's about them actively trying to drive away users with idiotic new "features" lol

Oh are they rare? I got 2 Emails for both my account, one of em hasn't seen use in years

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

I wouldn't have thought they'd be rare, except that I didn't get one until now. They don't have my email address though, perhaps that's why.
