What's really crazy is that via PACs and the like, the politicians themselves could not even know what corporations sponsor them.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (3 children)

Yep, been like this since corporations became people over a decade now.

Hooray for 10+ years of oligarchic corporatocracy, late stage capitalism appears to now be terminal stage, flatlining, resurrecting fascism and inventing neofeudalism!

What bull. It's ridiculous that we equate an idea with real human lives. People who experience pleasure and pain, bleed when cut, have families. Only a monster would consider a business a person.

Welp I wish there were more people of your opinion back in... god, was it 2010? Somewhere near there, when the Citizens United case was decided.

Oh well. Theres literally no way to fix it now sans basically a widespread general strike, and thats not gonna happen in America anytime soon.

There's a plan, one with a real chance that'll start 5 years from now. Have a look and if you like what you see, start preparing

They're only people when it comes to lobbying rights, not when it's time for accountability.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago

I was being a bit glib but yes this is more accurate.

A person can be sent to prison in many cases either functionally or precisely for non payment of debts.

Corporations on the other hand in many cases exist entirely for the purpose of either taking on ludicrous debts and then dissolving what they owe into nothing via bankruptcy, or in Mitt Romney's case, exist entirely for the purpose of parasitically extracting all the wealth out of other corporations and then making them kill themselves via bankruptcy.

Its just a fun game for the wealthy, who massively personally profit off of it all, as they destroy the very economy and society they lord over.

Exactly

oligarchic corporatocracy, late stage capitalism

As they said

[–] cuerdo 0 points 9 months ago

a decade? juridical persons have been documented 2000 years ago, what happened 10 years ago?

[–] BigWheelPowerBrakeSlider 3 points 9 months ago

They know. The point is to be known to the politician to whom the corporation is pitching monetary woo. And conversely to be known to the corporation to whom the politician is too pitching the woo.

Nico Semsrott, comedian and member of the European parliament, did just that

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 months ago

What a legend

[–] deweydecibel 35 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This is almost word for word a joke from Man of the Year. Robin Williams says it right in the trailer.

[–] CosmicTurtle 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That movie was.... weird.

I liked it. But it was weird.

[–] deweydecibel 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Oh yeah, it was a movie with an interesting premise that got fast tracked with a half-baked script. I think they expected Robin to carry it but they just didn't give him anything to work with. It's literally a movie about a comedian in a farcical situation, but it's written like a drama, then it gets bogged down in the conspiracy around the voting machines instead of just...having fun with the premise.

Worst part is it's, it tries to sell you on the premise of a comedian accidentally becoming president, but that's not actually what happens. He doesn't actually get to be President, the whole movie takes place before he's sworn in.

We're going to need a bigger jacket

[–] chknbwl 4 points 9 months ago

I'd prefer the politician that doesn't need to wear any jacket

[–] Lemminary 3 points 9 months ago

Trench coats?

[–] Anamnesis 17 points 9 months ago

This was a great idea when I heard it like ten years ago. It's still a great idea.

[–] Aurelius 10 points 9 months ago

I could see this really backfiring. Politician jacket patches could be sold like advertising space

[–] psycho_driver 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I believe we would need full-length robes with very small print.

[–] aeronmelon 4 points 9 months ago

Bridal trains.

[–] franklin 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Would give me some Idiocracy vibes.

The presidential debate with:

Donald Trump brought to you by Goldman Sachs, BP and Monsanto!

And the reigning champ:

Joe Biden brought to you by Monster Energy, Bank of America and Taylor Swift's Jet fund!

I don't have any point with this, I was trying to be funny and the joke/point for away for me. I'm leaving this here as a monument to my failure.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's some great insight, @tropicanapussy.

[–] SkyezOpen 6 points 9 months ago

Uhhh, /c/rimjobsteve?

[–] Dadifer 6 points 9 months ago

Couldn't we overlay video feed of politicians with little nascar patches on live tv?

[–] TheGiantKorean 4 points 9 months ago

Product placement during debates.

"And as far as infrastructure - wait, give me a second, I need to use my Wegovy, so that I can continue to regulate my blood sugar. And I may even lose weight! Ah, there we go. Anyway, infrastructure..."

[–] DandomRude 2 points 9 months ago

I misread the post at first and thought it was about NASCAR sponsoring politicians on a grand scale. Must have been some kind of Freudian slip due to the fact that US politics itself is so similar to trash TV entertainment these days.
