we are frogs collectively boiling ourselves and aware of it but too corrupted to stop.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation, or ENSO as it is also called, is the most powerful fluctuation in the climate system anywhere on Earth. It happens every three to seven years, and in the warming phase, warmer waters come to the surface of the tropical Pacific and push heat into the atmosphere.

"Climate scientists aren't surprised about the global daily temperature record being broken, but we are very concerned," Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science at Imperial College London, said.

It "should be a wake-up call for anyone who thinks the world needs more oil and gas," she added.

Hopefully this makes more people take climate change seriously.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

Good joke lol

Not until someone can make it profitable.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It’s not about the amount of people taking it seriously. And people in general are pretty worried anyway.

Only a handful of people need to take it seriously to actually alleviate it, those who control or regulate most of the emissions. Your or my opinions mean shit.

Nothing short of revolution will make a difference, and the coddled slob of the western world won't lift a finger in self defence until he's physically dying.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Many people are taking it seriously. But people like you and me can't really do much if big companies (and/or governments) continue what they're doing.

[–] SleazyCommunist 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sure you are aware of this but for other folks, the economy is built around oil at every level. Plastics is an entire industry which just exists to supplement the leftovers of oil capitalism. Our leaders know this, so instead of starting at the lowest level, they seek increasingly impractical solutions. I.E Geoengineering.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Point taken. We're fucked, aren't we? Smh.

[–] SleazyCommunist 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fucked yes, doomed maybe not. The most practical solution is also the most impractical, given our current situation. Call it communism or call it a blue donkey if you want, but centrally planned carbon rationing based on projections of emissions is about the only genuine hope future generations have. We know how much we can emit. We have known for a long time. Now, comes the tricky part. How do we maintain a functional civilization while also drastically reducing emissions to meet the goal of carbon zero?

Computer models can help us keep track of carbon production in real time and even be converted to manage specific sectors. This is where the central planning aspect comes in. The average person should not be a victim of these changes. Folks still need to go to work, pay rent and all the basic requirements of life. Instead of a carbon tax, we need a carbon ration which starts at the bottom of society then goes upward to the highest producers. As we go up the ladder, the amount of carbon allowed to be produced on a single hypothetical day shrinks. Eventually reaching those industries and individuals doing the most damage, then putting the burden of reduction on them. The rich/Corporations can find those solutions easily. There will be some instability and no doubt chaos, but they have the resources needed. Amazon, for example, already uses tons of metadata to plan the most efficient routes.

The We may only be fucked short term but we're doomed long term if we stay in charge of ourselves instead of building something more benevolent than ourselves to protect ourselves from our own baked in inner darkness: greed, arrogance, apathy, selfishness, narcissism, schadenfreude, gluttony, etc.

Human beings are the worst at far off threats and warnings. Climate change will have to kill a significant, at minimum double digit percentage of the species before we even begin to consider changing our lifestyles. Even then, we don't retain lessons. It only took a single human lifespan for the Israelis to go from being the most sympathetic of victims to the unrepentant victimizers, for repentant Germany's far right to re-emerge, and even for the former saviors like the US and UK to literally court fascism. As a species, we can barely learn and we absolutely cannot generationally retain hard lessons. That used to be fine, until science provided us with tools that make our significant shortcomings destructive on a truly global scale.

We're aggressive monkeys with nuclear/biological/chemical weapons, and evolution is far too slow to compensate for that recipe for disaster.

Not saying I disagree, but I see a hopeless situation as a liberating reason to not give into doomerism. In history, we see that every major environmental change changes human society in radical ways. Agriculture developed out of the end of an Ice Age. Feudalism in Europe came from a period of global cooling and likewise, capitalism followed the end of said cooling. Fascism itself is a vicious form of capitalism. People get too caught up in scientifically diluting a core point of what makes it worse than the current liberal order. When all that matters is that it is in fact capitulation because Fascism’s strength of reorganizing a state is also its weakness as it clamps down on mechanisms for reform then ultimately reduces productive relations to a primitive state.

What you’ve listed are not recent developments. Zionists were already committing terrorist acts in British occupied Palestine before there was ever a modern Isreal. The major corporate powers of Germany: Krupp, IG Faben etc were all but forgiven at Nuremberg for their role in the holocaust then reintegrated into West Germany before a United Germany even existed. The United States, like pre-world war 2 Japan, transitioned seamlessly into a system which shares all the trappings of a fascist economy and never left.

Capitalism as a system has been on life-support for a long time. With each new iteration being an attempt to keep the sick old man breathing another few years. Now we face the inhuman core of humanity at its most ruthless. The tools to address the problem are there, ready to be used, produced by said old man. Whether or not we will use them is not something I can predict. However, what I wanted to make clear with my original comment is the infrastructure is already in place and the first major step is buying time.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Except the problem is that now that we’re really feeling the effects, it’s too late to do anything ‘easy’ to stop it from getting much, much worse.

I am sure China will stop burning coal right away.

Same energy as the almost yearly "once in a century flood/storm/wildfire".

[–] abessman 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

But remember, it's not your fault! So you don't have to do anything about it. In fact, nothing you could do would matter anyway!

Just keep consuming, citizen.

It was always a lie by the capitalists to pawn off accountability for their insatiable greed driven decision to continue to terraform our only planet to be hostile towards human life for short term profit.

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220504-why-the-wrong-people-are-blamed-for-climate-change

https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change

No amount of peasants separating cans and bottles or using cloth diapers would have changed the temperature of today, that was just a way to shift blame from the perpetrator with the bully pulpit to powerless individuals like us.

Should we recycle and consume a lot less? Of course, but never forget, that empty, purpose sapping, depression/anxiety causing consumer lifestyle isn't simply a choice we get to make, it is pushed on us all day every day at every level both through culture and through mass media the oligarchs fully own and through scholastic indoctrination through policy manipulation as the oligarchs own our politicians. We are raised from the cradle to conflate consumption with meaning. We are taught as children that a thriving consumer economy helps everyone when it really only helps a tiny sliver of the population at everyone else's expense.

The capitalists, not the self-hating peasant capitalism sycophants, the people that hold significant capital, will continue to blame their victims, even when they have to retreat to the luxury bunker compounds they've been building in places like new Zealand to protect themselves exclusively from the damage they've knowingly inflicted on the human race.

And watch, their descendants will emerge a generation or 2 later, fully believing they were the ones who were wronged, expecting to lead the remnants of humanity once again. We'll be dumb enough to let the sociopath's progeny do it, too. I've yet to see my species collectively declare that enough's fucking enough when the capital hoarders fuck us all over.

No amount of peasants separating cans and bottles or using cloth diapers would have changed the temperature of today, that was just a way to shift blame from the perpetrator with the bully pulpit to powerless individuals like us.

The idea of the powerless consumer is a lie the consumer class tells itself to feel better about its impending, largely self-inflicted, doom. Individually, consumers are certainly less to blame for climate change than billionaires, but they are neither powerless nor blameless.

Individual action is every bit as meaningless as voting in elections, or participating in any other large scale social movement. By repeating to ourselves the comforting lie that my own contribution to the problem is both negligible and inevitable, we play right into the hands of the billionaires.

Responsibility for the climate disaster does not divide cleanly into perpetrators and victims. Many, many people fall into both groups, or will eventually. The climate disaster has already claimed many victims, but the global consumer class is not among them, yet. But their time will come.
