You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you

[–] [email protected] 85 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Strange women laying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government

If I went around, claiming I was an emperor, cuz some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Shut up, will you??? Shut up!!!

Oooh, now we see the violence inherent in the system!

edit: I thought this line and this exchange was funny back when I was a religious, white, male teenager in a conservative part of the US. Now that I've grown up and seen enough injustice and evidence to become an anti-theist socialist living in a different (but still conservative) part of the US, it hits a little too close to home to be truly funny.

I mean the others haven't proven much better...

"[I]t has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time"

Best thing I've seen this morning! Bravo, kiddo, never lose that!

Right?
Watching it "live" yesterday my jaw just dropped, the kid before did the expected "yeah, I love the royals" and Harry Hill made a joke about maybe not wanting to go on holiday with some of them which I thought was already quite risque for a kids show, but then Ilhām comes out with that and it absolutely made my day. I have a feeling (and hope!) that's not the last we hear of her..

[–] littlebluespark 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Could y'all send her across the pond, please? We could do with a bit of her in US politics, especially considering 90%+ of the current elected officials behave younger than she is...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

We're in pretty desperate need ourselves tbf...

The Offspring would like to say otherwise

For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the Crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is.

Thomas (bring the) Paine

"You wouldn't want a revolution" spoken like the rich are sacrificing themselves in every indulgence so we don't have to.

Now ~~Lemmy~~ lemme eat cake! ... or whatever it is you are preparing.

That little girl rocks!

[–] Chairsareoverrated 18 points 11 months ago

Good for her!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 11 months ago

Hope she baked a cake in the form of a guillotine

[–] Brekky 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Isn't this on channel 4 now? Not really surprising considering they do the alter atuve Christmas message and have done since like the 90s.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 11 months ago

Ch4 like to pretend to be progressive, and they absolutely do push boundaries more than the other channels, but under the thin veil they're just another neoliberal mouthpiece. So yeah, while it's not that surprising that of all the channels it's on 4, even for them, it's bolder than they would normally allow.

That guy's condescending mugging with every reasonable statement she makes is infuriating.

[–] [email protected] 49 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

As I've mentioned in other comments, the guy is openly ant-monarchy, his facial expressions aren't of derision, this is filler on a kids show, not a political interview. If he'd agreed with her the whole thing would have never made it to air.

This is about her, why can't we keep it that way?

[–] deweydecibel 17 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

And frankly, even without knowing he was anti-monarchy, those reactions didn't come off as condescending to me. Read it as surprise, and perhaps a little nervous she'd say something more that'd have to be cut, but not condescending. He's clearly smiling.

[–] obinice 32 points 11 months ago

That's just the character he plays for his comedy, he's not actually disagreeing with her here. You could consider his facial expression to mean "That's a controversial opinion to air on a baking show", but only because if he didn't ape that response they'd probably not have sent it to air haha.

[–] EnderMB 10 points 11 months ago

Uhhh...you should probably read about Harry Hill.

[–] ABoxOfPhotons 7 points 11 months ago

I dont know who won this but if it wasn't her, i'd be angry.
