I graduated from UWE. I'm embarrassed to say where it actually is. I used to compare it to Greendale Community College, but at least Greendale had a swimming pool.

It INFURIATES me how many companies will spend money on backups, but not ever test that their backups restore or allow for continued functionality afterwards.

At one company, I banged this drum for years, and one day we had a situation where someone "accidentally" deleted all the media from a client website. I had to dig through several backups and rebuild from beta, which annoyed me endlessly, but I dropped the "I fucking told you so" several times, and hinted that our "restore scripts weren't working as intended" to the client. It took me a full day to do what should have taken maybe 1-2 hours at most...

Anime words/gestures

So, Japanese?

Absolutely 100% this.

To be totally blunt, this doesn't need political backing. This requires people collectively coming together, forming unions with single-focus, and pushing for an increase in pay to align with the cost of living. Hell, if anything it's better if Trump and his lackies oppose this, because you ultimately have the power to cripple these businesses via strikes, forming your own cooperatives off the back of your soon-to-be previous employers, or simply signalling to businesses that if they cannot afford to pay people enough money they shouldn't be in business.

Push for gradual increase year-on-year until pay is aligned. If this is missed, everyone walks. Push for the removal of limited sick pay, and for 25+ days minimum vacation time a year. Leave it at that, and you've got terms that 90% of workers will agree to. Can't get a single company to agree? Create a professional body for your line of work and promote it as the place to be for those in your field. Push for accreditation for roles, and shun those that avoid it.

Okay, let me rephrase. How does the orange baby affect whether I can afford to live in NY?

[–] EnderMB 2 points 1 day ago (5 children)

While I fully empathize, how is this helpful to the question I asked? It's arguably the same rhetoric that you'd see from those on the right that probably don't want a foreigner taking a domestic job...

Totally get that, and from our side that's at least somewhat clear - if somewhere costs $4k to rent we'll be paying $4k a month with deposit, bills, etc (assume $5k). Where we're a little lost is where the "hidden costs" might be. Will health insurance for three people be prohibitively expensive? How much should we budget for my wife and daughter to enjoy their time in NY?

I've been offered a transfer from London to NYC, and have been offered a salary of $220k. My wife is going to take a year out of work to care for our infant daughter, so this money will be our full income as a family.

The American system confuses me hugely. Following most calculators, it sounds like we will have roughly $11k a month. If we assume $4k a month on rent somewhere roughly 45-60 mins from Broadway, is $6-7k enough for a family to live on, including stuff like healthcare for the entire family through work?

This might be a silly question, but will we have a comfortable/good time in NYC or NJ on this salary? Will my wife be able to afford to take my daughter out for stuff like swimming lessons and baby classes, and will we have enough to afford stuff like flights home to see family in the UK? I've spoke to a few people at work, and we've had ranges from "wtf half a mil is lots!" to "wtf you'll be limited to NJ and won't be able to take vacations", so it would be good to get more perspectives.

She's right and all...

But will it actually matter? The public voted for a pedo rapist felon. Surely if the triple threat is your pick for president, to be considered "incompatible" you would have had to do something truly horrific.

Many of our airports are also owned by foreign companies. My local airport is owned primarily by the Canadian public pensions fund...

I think some would accept it more if public transport was good, but getting the train into London is so expensive I could literally put a deposit on a flat up north for the price of a season ticket. I'm literally self-funding a visa to the US for a third of the price of my train ticket to London...

The Lizzy Line is my line when I go to the office, so I hope they don't fuck it up more than it can be. It's usually reliable, but when it isn't, fuck me it's a nightmare...

I had discussed it with my wife. I didn't want her to feel obligated to do so, and I know it would be awkward at her work to change her last name, but ultimately she wanted to - so I guess that's one reason?

There is a degree of closeness from it that I think some people appreciate. If you all share a last name, perhaps you feel closer as a family? I've known some people that don't share the same last name as their kids, or people that went double-barrelled, but didn't with their kids, and some of them had either changed later, or regretted not having the "same" name.

You only need to look at the many BlueSky posts here to see that many people view BlueSky as an attack on federation. It's only natural to see people on Mastodon shitting on BlueSky for taking what they see as their success away from them.
