!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

MODERATORS

So, coming from the world of RIF where downvotes haven't been a thing for quite some time: what are downvotes for in Lemmy?
What am I expressing when I downvote?

I don't agree with the post? I don't want the post to gain notoriety? I don't like the sentiment or the way it's expressed (even if it's factually true)?

Help!

Downvotes weren't a thing in Reddit is Fun? I definitely remember downvoting things using RIF right until the end.

To me, I will downvote things that do not deserve any visibility. Such as things that are factually wrong, things that don't contribute, overplayed jokes, hateful posts,...

Think I mist be losing my mind, was it just certain subreddits that didn't do downvotes? Anyway, thanks for the answer.

This is some mandela effect shit, you definitely could downvote on rif up to the last day

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

In addition to what the other user said: some subs were hiding the downvote buttons through their custom subreddit styles. You'd only see this if you used old.reddit though and if you disabled the css (or used an app like RiF) you could downvote as normal.

Maybe that's where your confusion started.

I used RIF every day for the past 8 years until it closed down and I have never seen any instance where I couldn't downvote.

Down votes are and always will be "I don't like this thing." Any attempts to make it mean more will always devolve back to this.

This is sadly the most realistic answer.

[–] Falmarri 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Imo it's not sad. Just reality

Reality can be (and often is) very sad indeed.

At the end of the day, a downvote boils down to "this should be less visible". Everything else is just prescription or assumption.

So, coming from the world of RIF where downvotes haven’t been a thing for quite some time

Not sure what you mean by this, I used RiF and that still had downvotes. Downvotes are generally used for low effort content, people trying to troll or are intentionally rude. Just generally content you don't want to see and does not fit in with the community you're in. It's not a disagree button.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you buddy, think I'm going crazy, was sure I'd not seen a downvote button of RIF for a long time.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You might have disabled it in the settings I think

A riddle for you. If you have two, you are normal. If you have one you are generous, if you have none you are dead, and if you have three you are a criminal. What is this?

The healthiest way to use downvote is to downvote off-topic comments and posts. Don't vote up or down stuff you disagree with. Report trolls and flamebait

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

If you have three, you're a donation recipient.

They don't always remove the old one.

If you have none, you could be on a dialysis machine permanently and still alive. I think.

Self-validation/relief.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

i just upvote, if its not "worthy" it will get out-voted easily. A "1" does not mean anything.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Down votes are for poor quality posts and comments. They are not for things you disagree with unless it's also a bad post. It's also for community enforcement of rules and norms.

Examples: "Hitler did nothing wrong"... Down votes and report to moderators.

What about Obama violating the Constitution killing Americans without due process. He stayed president so Trum can to. - down vote and explain the logical fallacy.

Pink and magenta are the same color! - down vote because it's factually wrong.

Thomas Kinkade is a great artist! And here is why ... - up vote and comment on why you disagree and try to encourage discussion.

Skunks smell good! - up vote and discuss how some people have generic difference that make skunks not smell as bad.
