Not a Canadian - I keep seeing people ridiculing the Conservative party here on Lemmy, but I saw on wikipedia that they are currently leading the polls?

Trudeau is not popular as well, if I'm not mistaken. I know an older Canadian who hates Trudeau with passion and praises Poilievre...

Is this similar to Trump's populism strat? What is it that the conservatives are promising to be that popular?

Edit: thanks all for the explanation, I wish the best for you guys

Yeah

They aren't Trudeau, and they're good at manipulating our dumbest with American-style politics

Part of it is the pendulum of Canadian politics. The Liberals have been in power for a long time and many people in the "great Canadian middle" have swung over to the Conservative side. That makes the prospects of another Liberal government forming in the next election slim.

But also, yes, there are some people who hate Trudeau on principle. My holidays this year were exhausting.

Yes, me too. I get it from both my side and my wife's side of the family and it's absolutely exhausting. I'm feeling like an outcast these days. It's especially upsetting because my family USED to be more liberal in general. I have no idea what changed, but now Trudeau is evil as far as they're concerned.

...here on Lemmy...

Lemmy skews liberal. Not that there's anything wrong with thatβ„’.

As for who is leading the polls, the grass is always greener on the other side of the House of Commons.

While I honour the secret ballet and assure you that my vote will never be known, I love arguing that one should take advantage of the fact that Canada does not have a two-party system. Let the other guys have a turn at screwing up Canada, for a change.

People who are dissatisfied with their day-to-day lives blame our Federal Government, who happens to be the Liberals right now.

But the reality is that Conservative provincial leaders are the ones who've made their lives miserable. Housing, education, transportation, healthcare, cost of living... all provincial matters.

Conservative voters just don't know/want to know this fact.
