To my knowledge lemmy.world doesn't have personalized algorithms. just some odd people, like everywhere

He's using Boost, so it's his own fault. It's just your standard ad network crap.

I'm using boost, I've not got any ads?

Looking trough the settings, there's no way to turn ads off or on, and no payment for them. Just a voluntary donate button.

Did you pay for it? Or it could be regional

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Looks like there's no option to pay to remove ads, just a donation button.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I believe there's a donation button after paying for it. If you didn't pay for boost then there are ads inter-stitched.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Then I must've paid, thanks for figuring that out!

Same. I don't remember paying for it, but I know donated through the Reddit version, so it would make sense that I would have also purchased the lemmy version if I was given the option.

I just like using Boost because I can have the exact same interface between both Reddit and Lemmy. The Reddit version was removed from the Play store, though, so I needed to side-load it when I switched to this new phone. Still works, though.

It was removed because the dev has to pay for your use of the api. And I think reddit also just removed a bunch of api endpoints.

I don't know, how can I check?

Do you have dns-based adblock? That reliably stops boost from fetching and displaying those.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I use cloudlfare dns, those dns blockers break some websites

I don't understand why people use apps instead of web interface...

That the apps serve ads makes it even more confusing

[–] [email protected] 15 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Because the web ui sucks, imo

β€œSucks” is generous. Maybe it’s passable on desktop?

Also there are apps without ads.
In fact I didn’t know there were apps with ads before this post.

I use an app (Voyager) and have no ads, they just chose one with ads for some reason

[–] Thcdenton 4 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Im just used to it from reddit. Its comfy

If you're interested in trying an app with no ads, I'm using Thunder and it's great. Cross platform for Android and iOS.

The ad free upgrade for boost is only a few dollars. I don't remember if it's done through the app or the play store, though.

[–] Thcdenton 2 points 5 days ago

I might. Ads are pretty unintrusive on lemmy, but these caught my eye

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I used Boost back in the Reddit days, but when I came over to Lemmy I found there were much better ad-free apps, like Voyager.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Only Boost and Sync have added ads. There are much better FOSS Lemmy clients like Voyager, that are ad-free and have a much better interface than web.

Jerboa, Raccoon etc dont do ads(get them.from F sroid) . Boost does if you don't buy it.
