I figured this was the reason, but didn't want to assume. As user Ferk says below, you're actually better off to have the tasks run before playing, rather than on start of playback. Since there's no way for the system to know when that is, I don't know how you'd automate that.
Unless you have noticed performance impacts during your regular workflow, I tend to agree with what you wrote:

Anyone claiming one OS is the "best" is often either incredibly misinformed, or intentionally trolling.

Use whatever OS does the job you need it to do, nobody cares. They're all great/suck/win/lose.
If you're interested in trying an app with no ads, I'm using Thunder and it's great. Cross platform for Android and iOS.
Cool article and write-up. But just $240!? This guys saved them a bundle - you’d think they’d at least pay a week of what they should have paid someone on their security team.
