I GOT YA (part 2) (lemmy.world)

With a +0 Mimic tooth too, right as I was making a run to kill the ebony mimic to add it to my bestiary. Also, it is over a strength potion and I think I don't have enough gear to kill it 🥲

So, I've spent about 7 hours in this game and dying at this point was really painful, after killing the DM-300 and surviving the dwarven city (which was incredibly hard) I died at the hands of some monk. No food, no health potions, nada.

I'm playing as a rogue assassin, I had got a level 8 evasion ring, which I was hoping would make it impossible for enemies to hit me. I also had level 2 plate armour with viscosity.

Looking back this was definitely my fault, I think I was too careless in the dwarven city. I lost two ankhs in one level.

Any advice?? This is the farthest down I've got.

I had already done runs where every possible upgrade went into a Throwing Stone or Studded Gloves. I wanted to try maxing out the Mage's Staff. Normally I would only ever upgrade it to about +12. At +8 you get the max 10 zaps, and upgrading higher is just for damage.

The trick to get max upgrades was to not upgrade the staff until I met the Troll Blacksmith and I could put two of his upgrades into it before spending any scrolls, but you can actually do better than that.

The Old Wandmaker gave me a +3 Wand of Lightning! Perfect! In all of my hundreds of games, I have literally never used the feature where you imbue a higher level wand into the staff for "free" upgrades. I would always dump the first 7 upgrades I found into the staff to smooth out the early game and kill bosses.

This time I waited until I found the troll on Floor 12 and suffered with a +0 staff until then. That was the only real challenge in this mode of play. Then I had the Troll do one upgrade on the staff before I imbued the +3 wand into it, resulting in a +4 staff. Excellent start! Them I dumped 7 upgrade scrolls into it. Now I was suddenly a beast, one-shotting almost everything.

On floor 24 my staff was +19. Just murdering everything. Elemental Blast with Lightning is really good, BTW. Stuns everything in a radius for a long time. And then I made a critical mistake!

I'm so used to doing these challenges with melee characters that I had the brilliant idea to Curse Infuse my staff. That made it +23! Nice! Time to go fight Yog. I try to zap him and paralytic gas comes out. What have I done!? I had no scrolls of Remove Curse. I had to do the whole fight with melee only. Not gonna lie, a +23 staff hits for a lot. My curse was Flashing, and I had Eye of Newt, so it wasn't even a bad curse.

I decided to try the ascent, and it was tough. The imp didn't have any scrolls either. I had already bought and used them. The enemies during the ascent get so much evasion. I used a lot of healing pots. On floor 2 there was an unused Well of Health, so I uncursed my staff so I could have fun zapping things again on floor 1. I must have killed 40 rats just for fun.

Now I want to try this exact run again, Curse Infusion and all, but with Wonderous Resin! I'll have to find a seed that has the resin and another +3 wand. Actually, I'm not even sure that'd be interesting. It would still only shoot cursed zaps, and they would be neutral at worst. That still means I would get a lot of bubbles, paralytic gas, random teleports, and probably not a lot of damage. I dunno. Worth a try.

I just had to test the newest SPD 2.5.0b3 on the oldest Android device I have, and I am proud to say that it works great!

My old Zeki nearly went into the trash this month as nearly all support for 4x has ceased. Then I discovered XPlayer, a 3rd party app designed to run MKV movies in h265 format. Along with WiFi FTP I am able to stream quality movies on this old tablet.

Better still, I can now play one of the best roguelikes ever on it! Thank you 00-Evan for not writing off older hardware.

While playing beta I was shocked to read the changes to ring of haste by reducing the effect from 20% to 17.5%

Now I am waiting for the drop currently to try and experience the changes but Iam really disappointed reading about the nerf

Has anyone tested the ring? Will the turns be impacted to avade the monsters significantly like requires more upgrades than before?

Strategies for On Diet? (self.pixeldungeon)

I've been slowly increasing the number of challenges I play with, but I always get stumped on how to work around on diet. Does chalice of blood work even when starving/hungry? Does ring of haste effectively increase how much you are able to explore before going hungry? Is it more efficient to craft pies or not? Thanks!

Turns out, making it to the Troll Blacksmith with +0 gloves wasn't all that hard. There's always the bow and random wands.

Finished the ascent with one potion of healing left and no food except for a couple of hasty blandfruit which I forgot about all game.

Someone on Discord mentioned how good Aqua Brew is, and damn, it's amazing! I made it twice (16 uses) and ended the game with just a couple left. They have so much utility in so many situations. They're like baby Ethereal Chains sometimes: you can push yourself over 1-tile gaps and push enemies into chasms. Plus they break traps, and put yourself out when on fire.... kind of. I swear in used one right on my head, got pushed away, took several damage, and was still on fire. I had to take a step to put the fire out. They're also really good for putting distance between you and an enemy who's all up in your butt.

I did not know if upgrading this tier 4 weapon a lot eventually makes it better than an upgraded tier 5 weapon. The in-game text is not clear on this. According to the fandom page, it appears the answer is no- https://pixeldungeon.fandom.com/wiki/Shattered_Pixel_Dungeon/Weapons#Runic_blade

Given that, I would like to know the reasoning behind this game design decision. Is this weapon supposed to incentivize players to wait until tier 4 weapons to start upgrading weapons with scroll of upgrade? Or is this weapon supposed to incentivize players to upgrade runic blade instead of upgrading a tier 5 weapon? The latter seems to not be the case, since tier 5 weapons with the same amount of upgrade seems to be stronger than the runic blade. However, the former may not be the case either, because if the beginner player does not know to wait on using scrolls of upgrade until they get high tier weapons or armor (instead of throwing them all into worn shortsword like I did originally), then the beginner probably does not know that this weapon exists either. So what is the game design decision regarding the effect of this weapon?

Thank you for your help.

A few days ago I obtained the amulet using only tier-3 equipment (https://lemmy.world/post/18859193). I've been trying to win with tier-2 items, and today I finally made it! (No challenges active).

My rule is simple: items identified in their description as tier 3, 4 or 5 cannot be equipped, ever.

I tried ten times or so with a gladiator, but the leather armor is just too weak. I couldn't make it past the first couple of floors in the dwarven city; I was taking too much damage, and was drinking potions of healing as if they were water in the desert.

I realized that a melee play style is unsustainable with leather armor. I decided to try to keep enemies away and kill them using ranged weapons. This means, of course, a sniper.

In this run, I was lucky to get:

  • a grim enchantment for the bow
  • entanglement on the armor
  • an elastic handaxe
  • a bumper wand
  • a ring of arcana
  • the ethereal chains

I'm not sure I could have won without that combination. Despite having a leather armor (blocking a laughable 4-12 damage), I ended up with 14 potions of healing.

One of the main difficulties of a tier-2 run is that there is simply very little tier-2 equipment in the dungeon! In some runs I wouldn't find a leather armor, or a good weapon, or neither. I think the best bet is to pray the ghost drops something useful, but more often than not, the drops are either not upgraded or higher tier.

Anyway, it was fun! I may decide to do a tier-1 run sometime, but I need to take a few weeks rest from SPD first.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon's next major update will be going to beta early this coming week.

Here's one more new thing coming in v2.5: new cursed wand effects! I'm adding 16 new effects, ranging from simple bubbles to a rare but extreme supernova explosion! The bubbles are harmless but you really, really want to avoid the explosion.

(Image description: A GIF showing the new supernova explosion effect. A yellow glowing orb keeps growing in size while danger indicators litter the floor. After 10 turns the orb explodes, killing the player)

Shattered Pixel Dungeon v2.4.2- android, github version

I am new to Shattered Pixel Dungeon. I am playing it on degoogled GrapheneOS. I get the apk from github via Obtainium. I am hoping that I can back up my save games / badges / rankings or even transfer them from the android version to the desktop version.

But I have a problem. I am not using the google play version, since Google is spyware. So I cannot transfer badges via Google Play. The other option seems to be to root my phone and use adb to transfer the files. The problem with that is that I am using GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS does not allow you to root your phone for security reasons. It is believed that that would ruin the android security model.

So I need a third method to do this. How can I back up my save games / badges / rankings without google play and without rooting my GrapheneOS phone?

Thank you for your help.

Shattered Pixel Dungeon v2.4.2- android, github version

I am new to Shattered Pixel Dungeon, and I am confused about the Huntress playstyle. The Huntress is able to go through grass without trampling it. Is there some sort of tangible benefit to being able to do this? Is there a stealth advantage as long as the Huntress is in the grass? I do not see some sort of active condition in the character menu when the Huntress is in grass. Otherwise, what is the tangible benefit to the Huntress not being able to cut grass?

Also, what exactly is the game plan for Huntress / using upgrade scrolls as Huntress?

For Warrior, I was struggling a lot since I was upgrading my original weapon instead of upgrading higher tier weapons. I did not know that upgrades go higher on the higher tier weapons. I saw on the internet that I should save my scrolls of upgrade for tier 5 weapons and armor, so I followed that strategy and managed to get a win.

For mage, I saw on the internet that you can go battlemage and put the scrolls of upgrade into the staff that you get by default at the beginning of the game. This makes the beginning of Mage a lot easier, since I do not have to hoard my scrolls until the end of the game. Otherwise, Mage feels harder at the beginning of the game than Warrior does. I managed to get a win with Mage by dumping all the scrolls of upgrade into staff and staff bashing the whole game. I was also lucky enough to imbue wand of fireblast into the staff.

For Rogue, I saved the upgrade scrolls until I could get a tier 5 melee weapon, then put most of the upgrades into the weapon. Rogue felt like the easiest class to win with so far. The Demon Halls are a lot easier when none of the enemies can see where I am.

For Huntress, however, what is the game plan? The spirit bow does not take upgrade scrolls, so I cannot upgrade it like I could upgrade the mage's staff. The starting weapon is very weak. The early game seems particularly hard, but I want to save my upgrade scrolls for a tier 5 weapon instead of spending them on weak weapons in early game. So what is the game plan here?

Thank you for your help.

edit: thank you for your comments. very helpful.

It's not that hard of a challenge. For one, you still have the bow. Two, the gloves really aren't bad! I was hitting for 20-25 damage, and you get two hits per turn. Also, the Warden is tanky as hell. That barkskin did a lot of work.

Ring of Accuracy so I could punch things better. I got almost every ring this run, and half were +1. I used Accuracy the most.

In order to hit +17, had to wait until I reached the troll blacksmith and spend his favor on two upgrades on the gloves before I could spend any upgrades scrolls. This meant the gloves were useless for most of the first half of the game. So I was using a +1 mace for a long time.

The +3 plate was quite the find.

Spirit Hawk is soooo good! Makes punching Scorpios a breeze due to the crippling and blindness the hawk inflicts. Plus the insane move speed it has. Once in a while I could blind an Evil Eye and avoid getting blasted, but rarely had time to move the hawk away, and it took the blast. Kinda makes the blindness not matter. Just taking aggro was enough for me not to get hit.

I had one ring of wealth i think +15 and the other one +2. Nearly died in demon halls and rerolled it to Tenacity which had a nice 92% damage reduction. On the way up I hadn’t read the amulet description thoroughly and almost died to the curse.

The wands were important too. Blasting, corrosion, earth, corruption, fireblast and the staff was transfusion. Honestly it felt like a perfect mix because every wand had a role in the fights.

Ended with a +6 great axe so the wealth didn’t help as much as I hoped. None of the wands dropped over +1 so I assume they don’t receive the benefit.

I wanted to see if the game was beatable with tier-3 equipment. The rule is simple: never equip any item whose description includes "tier-4" or "tier-5".

It turns out it's possible! I played with a gladiator, and the "swarm intelligence" challenge.

My weapon was a sword +1 (best tier-3 weapon that I could find), upgraded to +6 and augmented with a kinetic enchantment.

The armor was a chain mail +2 (again, best I could find), upgraded to +13 and with an anti-magic glyph.

I was lucky to find a good selection of rings. The RoF +3 was a gift from the imp in level 17 or 18, so I only had it for the final floors. The RoE was found at +0. The RoW helped in the first half of the game, and the RoM provided lots of bonus damage to my low-tier equipment.

I was also lucky to get a WoC +3 from the wizard. The WoF is always useful to slow down opponents.

The entire run was done without any help from artifacts. The ToF is the only artifact I found in the entire dungeon, and that was in level 19. Since I had stashed four or five Scrolls of Magic Mapping, I never used the Talisman.

In the end, it wasn't too difficult. What I missed most was the feeling of power from one-shotting mobs with a well-upgraded tier-5 weapon while feeling invulnerable with a plate armor.

I'm going to try a Tier-2 run next (with a similar rule), maybe without challenges. I haven't decided what class to use. Has anyone tried it before?

All my wins have been with tier-4 and tier-5 equipment. I want to see if I can win with only tier-3 items. My rules are never to equip anything above tier-3, not even thrown weapons. Playing with a gladiator, who is about to go down to level 13, with the swarm intelligence challenge.

Has anyone tried something similar? Do you think it's possible to win with only tier-2 or (gasp) tier-1 equipment?

Update: I'm about to start level 19, still with a sword +1, and with a mail +8 of anti-magic. It's amazing how far a tier-3 +1 weapon can take you!

Hey rat punchers, Shattered Pixel Dungeon v2.5.0 is getting very, very close to being ready for beta. Sorry for the delay, but there's a few additions over what I was originally planning for this update that have made it take a while.

One of those additions is region splash arts during the game's loading screens! After teasing these all the way back in 2023 they're now ready, and will release with v2.5.0!
