Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

To my mind, Ban has always meant permanent.
"You're banned from this place! You'll never be allowed in again!"

While I've always thought of Suspend as being temporary.
"You're being suspended from school for 1 week, over fighting."

Ban:

  1. to prohibit especially by legal means
  2. bar entry

Suspend:

  1. to debar temporarily especially from a privilege, office, or function
  2. a: to cause to stop temporarily
b: to set aside or make temporarily inoperative
  3. to defer to a later time on specified conditions
  4. to hold in an undetermined or undecided state awaiting further information

When I hear someone mention they were banned my reaction is: "Holy shit! WTF did you do to earn that!" Then I find out it was only for a day or three: "Oh... That's not a Ban! That's minor. Go touch grass. You'll be fine."

I've been banned from subreddits and communities a few times. At least once I never even noticed because it was so short.

How is it a Ban if I didn't even notice?

Why did Ban in online forums and games, come to mean temporary?

Is it simply an example of the intensification of language? To make something mundane, seem more severe than it is?

Does it bother anyone else? Or am I alone here?

I enjoy deleting my old posts and comments, but it's lot of work doing it individually, especially with comments. For other platforms there are apps you can login with, then delete old or all content, but I can't find one for Lemmy. Does such a thing even exist?

Why do i see so many comments that are missing? Sometimes they are in threads that are getting heated and I could understand someone deleting a really bad take but other times it's in a shitpost like the example.

this happens in a public park.

first time this happens to me afaik. I was just stretching with black leggings and a t-shirt. I noticed him 100 yards away walking around but always looking at me. Upon making eye contact he would look away but as soon as I turned to stretching, he'd look at me.

He started slowly approaching me and at one point stood at like 15 yards from me, but still separated by a fence. At that point I decided to cut my work out short and left avoiding eye contact.

I consider myself lucky because he didn't follow me.

What scared me the most is he was bigger and taller than me.

If this ever happened to you, how did you react? How do I react next time this happens?

If phones didn’t have the ability to use the internet. Would outside events like concerts, clubs, networking coms, parks, etc. benefit from that?

I was recently involuntarily hospitalized for a week, and during the admission/intake process I was strip searched and forced to shower. I’m not here to complain, I’m just wondering why they have to treat us like prisoners?

I would love to be more active in posting links to articles and websites I find interesting to the fediverse, but I find that searching for the appropriate community can be a hassle. With so many different instances hosting the same communities, it can be difficult to know where to post. Is there a Firefox extension that would allow me to quickly and easily post links to a single Lemmy community (for example https://reddthat.com/c/random)? I'm envisioning something like a bookmarking tool that lets me post the website I'm viewing with a single click. If there isn't an existing extension that does this, I'd be interested in finding a similar program that I could use for inspiration to create one myself.

Life does a lot, normally figures out how doggy works, but sorry for the language. If anyone here has worked in a cooler before, not just walk in fridges for restaurants or such I am looking for advice. They inquired about boots. I assume I need gloves, but what am I forgetting? ChapStick? Unknown? Please share and if you know what is cheap to acquire maybe recommend what you know. Thanks.

I have a Linux (Mint) laptop and a non-rooted Android (13) phone which I take to college, and also have a personal and a college Google account, both of which are essential. The emails of both the accounts are nearly identical, only differing by their domain name, and I am afraid I may mistake one for another and end up storing data in or using the incorrect account for a task. What measures can I take to keep both accounts isolated and ensure I am aware of which account I am currently using without resorting to purchasing separate devices for each account or rooting my devices?

Do note that this post only addresses the issue of keeping separation between the two accounts, and not directly the issue of invasion of privacy of use of these Google services, which is why I didn't ask this question in c/privacy.

So, I'm making this post because I'm currently torn between 3 options:

  • Upgrade my current T450 with 16GB of DDR3 and a 256GB (or maybe 512GB) NVME which has an i5-5300u and 1080p display
  • Get a T14(s) G1 with an AMD CPU (for about 400 euros or so)
  • Save up for a long time to buy a Framework laptop

The role of the laptop would be to do some software dev tasks and some light gaming (think ULTRAKILL, Minecraft and KSP, so really not anything that can't run on a good enough iGPU). Battery isn't much of a priority, since I'll use it plugged in most of the time, but it is preferred for when I do need it, nevertheless I don't wish to sacrifice CPU performance for it like what my T450 does when it crawls to 800MHz to extend its battery life from 4 hours to 5 hours (it has a dual 3-cell setup, both batteries at about 75% health). While I can save up a lot for a Framework or even a T14 Gen 5/6, I'd rather not because I just don't find it worth it for the price, and because It'd wear down my patience. Another large priority is durability, I am insanely clumsy. For example, one time I dropped my T450 at the very edge of a table so that it hit my foot and broke its old 1366x768 panel (good riddance, that resolution was atrocious). From what I can remember, most ThinkPads are in some way MIL-STD certified (80G or 80H depending on the model IIRC), starting with (unfortunately for my T450) the T460. I'd also like at least an FHD or higher display, but everything I've listed passes that. The only real benefit here for a Framework is the "eternal laptop" concept where I don't have to replace the laptop itself, ever, because I can just upgrade the parts in a Thesseus' ship kind of way, like some desktop users do, or just straight up replace them if they break but parts are scarce here in Greece, especially for Frameworks, so I'd have to get them shipped from their website which is not ideal, particularly because there's a physical store less than a couple minutes of walking which could easily replace e.g. a T14's display. If there are any other ThinkPad options (available in Greece!) at about the price of the T14, then I'd be glad to hear them.

To conclude, here are my priorities, grouped from highest priority to lowest priority:

  • Available in Greece, preferrably at a physical store
  • CPU Performance, Durability
  • Resolution, Repairability
  • Battery life

Can he download stuff like a regular hard drive where you get 256gb of space or is it like a cloud service or something?

and what for?

I don't understand the theatrics involved and being brutally honest, once I've decided a workplace is not a good fit I don't give a f*ck about it and put all my energies into transitioning to the new job.

Even if I may find the same sh*t at my new workplace, things cannot stand as they are now and I have to move on. I have to leave.

I don't believe any rational person would act differently.

People happy with their jobs don't go job hunting or interviewing. It's always the unhappy ones, the unfulfilled ones the ones that yearn for change, for something different the ones looking. It could be your micromanaging manager, it could be coworkers playing favorites or doing several 20 minute smoking pauses plus their regular 30 minute one...

Why pretend everything's sweet and dandy at the current workplace? It's ridiculous.

I'm now at a situation were I don't care about burning bridges and calling a spade a spade if they ask why I'm leaving (my coworkers are petty, childish, lazy, don't see that I'm constantly working while they talk about stupid issues and still need my help to finish their job), I work more than them and they still have an attitude with me.

If I leave my current workplace, chances are I won't come back nor work with my coworkers in the future. And even if I had to work with any of them in the future, why would I want to suffer that again? I'd reject that offer.

I value being sincere and while I could play the stupid game and claim I'll call them or hope our paths cross again (dear god, no) fully knowing that's a lie, I'd rather be direct and leave no looking back.

Even if you play theatrics because you think it's the only way to survive because you need the money, doesn't that mess with your mind, constantly having to suffer people you despise? I couldn't do it. My mental health is more important than playing stupid games (just my 0.02$).

I am asking for a single device that can not only charge all common battery types, LiPo, LiHv, LiIon, LiFe, NiMh and NiCd. But also it can test them for capacity, health and faults automatically. Basically, you put any (rechargeable) battery insode and the device tells you if the battery is ok to use, what current and max capacity are, all while the battery gets charged.

If such a device does not exist, what would come closest?

I set up a machine with Debian 12 earlier. The partition schema is fairly standard, except I'm using mdraid for redundancy. I made an image of the two drives, so that I can easily replicate this setup for other machines (I have a bunch of machines that I need to set up in the exact same way.

However, I realized after I finished setting up everything that I chose the wrong pair of disks - instead of the 2.5" SSD pair, I installed it on the NVMe pair which are supposed to be used for something else. And the SSD pair is smaller than the NVMe pair.

Is it possible to resize the images so that they'll fit onto the correct disks, or do I have to start from scratch?

so I'm a nurse and today was my 5th day on a row and I don't understand why my legs hurt. I didn't work harder today than other days, nor did I have to work with fat patients. I just had to walk a lot, but not much more than other days.

On my free time I like jogging and doing yoga, and right after I feel how my legs are looser and more relaxed. I however cannot go jogging every day. Today was my second day on a row not jogging.

Can this be the reason I'm in pain?

If running before my shifts actually helps me not to have pain after my shifts, how can that be? I'm basically using the same muscles.

There's so much doom on social media right now. The environment is collapsing. The economy will crash. Civil rights are ending. Democracy is dead.

What keeps you going? Why do you still get up and go do what needs to be done when the world seems to be ending around us?

To clarify the question somewhat, what I mean is: does having loved ones and/or a cause you're willing to die for give you strength? Or, does it instead expose a vulnerability to be exploited?

This post was originally much longer, but I've cut it down to keep it a bit more open ended. I know that the phrasing is somewhat misleading. In a way, you never really possess someone or a community or even something to lose, they're just people or things or causes for which you care deeply, and that care opens up the possibility for emotional pain that can be exploited. At the same time having those cares can give you a reason to live, a cause to fight for, a person for whom you are there to ride or die for.

I suppose the question I ultimately want to ask is, which ends up playing out more in your life experience? Someone exploiting your love/care as a weakness? Or that love/care motivating you to defend them to the bitter end?

I know this is likely to be a "it depends" answer, but if you have some further insights, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.

i was wondering about that, i mean technically it could be considered the last war because it was before the modern era (1900) and yes,i know about world war and etc but what i mean is that the mexican-american war was the last one that didn't have a lot of planning into it, similar to wars in the older days,,like there was no system control back then or like radio so technically, while not true, could it be considered "the last war of humanity"?
