I tried to find information on this topic but I couldn’t. I have a loose theory that the idea of habit formation only came about with trying to make a productive worker. Thoughts?

Sorry idk where to ask this

I recently found an unopened HP PhotoSmart 6520 in my mother in law's closet. She had it prepared for when her workhorse gave out. I've needed a scanner downstairs and want to figure out if I can safely connect this thing to the network without it bricking itself. You all probably already know HPs reputation and how they do sketchy things like blocking third party ink with firmware updates after the consumer has already purchased the product, or making it so you can't scan if the ink is out. Right now, all I want to do is scan some docs to linux, likely over USB, maybe over the network if I can get it to work. I don't want to rule out that my partner may want to print something.

What is the best way to go about this? Can I block the printer from accessing the internet on my router, but still have devices on the local network print to it? Should I? Can I see somewhere if updates are reported as safe and only then unblock the internet access so it can update?

Problem is, as usual, Google is less than helpful. Does anyone know where I can find a list of which printers were affected and which are still affected?

Gold has a lot of practical applications now (although is of course still treated as a 'precious' metal of value), but hundreds of years ago it was just a shiny metal. Why did it demand value, because of it's rarity? Why not copper, because it was too easily found? What made it valuable ahead of other similar metals?

reference image if you have no idea what I'm talking about:

I know this is a minor nitpick, but it's something that annoys me.

I got this graphics card mostly because it was the best deal on Amazon at the time (gpu shortage), and I also thought it looked decent from the images they had. However, when I actually installed it, all I see is the relatively unattractive looking black metal backplate with some white text. The other side is always the side shown in the promotional images too - not a single one of the pictures in the Amazon listing even shows the side that you'll be seeing 99.9% of the time. Do they think everyone hangs their PCs above them from the ceiling, or has open-air testbenches? Why do they never even bother with the other side? I know they want the fans on the bottom so the cooling is better, but the air in front of the CPU shouldn't be that bad, a lot of cheaper GPUs don't need that much cooling, and a ton of people have watercooling now anyways so the CPU radiators just go on the sides.

This was always an issue in Rome. People were afraid their heirs would turn out to secretly be wannabe dictators, and you couldn't do anything about it since you were dead. How would you go about making sure your heir was as close to your vision as possible, both outwardly and in their desires should they be emperor?

It crazy how many websites out there around bible collect information and share it with third parties. I looked at a bunch and couldn't find anything that's completely private.

Worst case, I would OK with them collect information but not share any information with third parties.

An example of what I mean:

I, in China, told an English speaking Chinese friend I needed to stop off in the bathroom to "take a shit."

He looked appalled and after I asked why he had that look, he asked what I was going to do with someone's shit.

I had not laughed so hard in a while, and it totally makes sense.

I explained it was an expression for pooping, and he comes back with, "wouldn't that be giving a shit?"

I then got to explain that to give a shit means you care and I realized how fucked some of our expressions are.

What misunderstandings made you laugh?

Was about to answer the billionaires one, realized there are better ways to spend this limited beautiful moment of life than being virtually shouted at.

How about you?

26°C for me. I live with my son & he enjoys wearing as little as possible at home. Cold also makes him feel depressed. I’m alright with both hot and cold.

why is like 30% of the content on Lemmy star trek related? is it just a side effect of the particular communities I'm in or is it an actual platform-wide thing?

It happens to me fairly often. Usually, it's with food I find less than appetizing, but it's not bad by any means. I think the problem stems from the fact that I cooked for about 8 years for my job. There was a lot of standing and eating, tasting dishes as I went, cooking food that I was never going to eat while I was hungry, etc..

Does anyone else share this problem?

Like imagine, one day... you turn on the news and see... "Breaking News: In a joint statement, the United Nations Security Council revealed that there has been an effort to conceal the existence of extraterrestial life that have arrived on our planet more than 50 years ago...". Its the trending top google search result, everyone on the internet is talking about it. How would you react. What would be the reactions of your relatives, friends, neighbors, and everyone else, and what would the front page of Reddit and Lemmy look like?

Mine is that Discovery should have been a series taking place in the Picard era.

I started to feel that a large portion of news outlets are just press releases republishing firms.

Which make me ask the following: why is there is no links aggregators that just give you a small summary and link to the original press release?

It's the most common sense thing that should happen, yet I am not aware of a single one that does that.

Why is no one doing that?

The gift needs to be able to come off as a genuine gift so there's some plausible deniability...

Edit: Just so it's clear, this is purely hypothetical. I just thought of the idea and thought it would be funny to see what a random person on Lemmy might think. This isn't a serious request and none of the suggestions will ever actually be used.

I have been waking up early since past 3 days and getting ~6hrs sleep on average. All 3 days, my brain's power has last longer and feels like it got "overclocked". I am able to take in lots of information, have more energy to talk to people(almost makes me think I'm might not be introverted) etc. I feel like a different person all together.

What is happening? I have no issues sleeping, I just had to wake up early and sleep late due to stuff.
