What are the benefits of using those sites?

I've heard Yahoo! is good for stock market trading and financial news, but haven't heard anything else about any of them.

Follow-up: For those with children, do you continue the ruse with your own children, or simply tell them it’s you who gives the gifts? Why or why not?

I would imagine it was harder to get information on topics as you would've had to buy/borrow encyclopedias to do.

Were there proprietary predecessor websites?

Tell me about the dark ages!

Fortune Teller's house from Link to the Past

Whatever has that back and forth EMDR effect, kinda like the DVD screensaver that bounces about the screen and hits an almost perfect corner sometimes

I am developing a game, and I want some assets for it. i was thinking of drawing some assets and then ask the "AI" to generate xyz based on my drawing style.

I was also considering just having a very specific prompt and using that to generate the assets I need.

I know there is a lot of skepticism about AI generated images, art etc. is there something I should know? Is it copyrighted? Can I use it as inspiration and make my own assets that are similar but not the same?

I am also just considering buying assets, but fear that it might not give me everything I need.

Any thoughts?

And, if you are comfortable with sharing, what are some of the worst things that you've seen?

For me it is Mondegreen: which is a misheard lyric, word or phrase that becomes popular and gives it new meaning.

As in, you see a movie trailer, and based only on that trailer you make up the whole movie in your mind, and it ends up being different than the actual movie. Was your version better or worse?

I'll go first: Men In Black 1 had a somewhat misleading trailer, where they're about to shoot down the flying saucer at the end, and they say to each other "Do you have any idea what you're doing?" "Not a clue." And they shoot. So in my mind it was two guys from the FBI who had to suddenly deal with the existence of aliens and learn to fight them on the fly, learning and making it up as they went along all the while learning to work with each other.

I recently rewatched the video of the woman on the plane screaming that the passenger beside her wasn't human and it got me thinking about something I've seen.

I remember seeing a teenage girl in a small food store I go to address the guy behind the counter as 'human'. "Thanks, human." Stuff like that. I think she was just doing a bit or something but I thought it was strange.

I just had a weird online encounter on Bluesky that made me start wondering what people are willing to accept when it comes to negative online social contact (comments, replies)? What sorts of things are red lines for you personally?

Previously, I would accept quite a bit and would only block/mute/report somebody if it was incredibly offensive, but I would still try to explain myself, argue my point, or defuse a situation or whatever, still honestly trying to engage and make my case. I would rarely block anybody because that seemed almost like cowardice, like I was running from a fight. Since joining Bluesky however, I will not hesitate to block people for the simplest of reasons. Oftentimes if they start parroting obvious right-wing propaganda, if it's a bot, if they're offensive, make it personal, or if they're obviously trolling. As soon as a person starts calling names or makes accusations about the person themselves and strays away from the topic at hand, that's kind of become my personal red line. If you don't know me and you make it personal right away, we're done.

To give some background, my conversation that prompted this was over books vs audiobooks (it's been a subject for weeks on bluesky). I was responding to a librarian's post saying that it's a pointless debate, books are books, doesn't matter if you read a book or listen to an audiobook. I replied, agreeing with her point, saying that the experience of taking in a story is what we're doing, whether it's a regular book with text, picture book, audiobook, movie, or whatever. One format or another may have trade-offs, but you're still absorbing the story, it's still a similar experience you're getting. Not particularly controversial, just adding input, just whatever.

A reply came in from another person, somewhat combative from the start, not particularly long, but there was edge to it I could tell ("So what are you saying? Reading is reading, listening is listening" or something like that). I assumed they wanted more clarification (thus the '?'), so wrote back just kind of explaining how media formats are different, our brain takes in the information differently, but that one format or the other wasn't better, just different. Again, not directed at the person, just discussing the idea.

They replied back with something fairly negative, really sounding like they wanted to start an argument and directing it personally at me as if I was the one being argumentative for replying to their question. Without hesitation I just blocked them. I was like, I'm not going to waste my time engaging with this person (though I apparently will waste my time posting about it on Lemmy). I'm not really afraid of getting feelings hurt or anything, call me whatever you want, but if it's an obvious negative experience they're trying to goad me into, I'm not going to engage, I'm just going to walk away.

It's an interesting thing that's happening on Bluesky, because that's the overall behavior that seems to be encouraged on there that I haven't really seen elsewhere, don't engage with obviously negative people, it's not worth it. Is that what we should be striving for, starving the trolls and trying to encourage polite, civil discourse?

I started seeing more and more non-free content (paywalled or non freely licensed articles and videos) and less Creative Commons or freely licensed content.

All of this is making me worried about the free content future.

Why aren't people worried about that and why they are not doing something about it?

I don't know of any non-profit currently that advocate for free-er world, which is essential for the libre culture.

Is it bots? Are those humans whos mission is to cause chaos? Is the weird behaviour caused by the creation of the concept of lemmy?

Somebody please explain to me wtf is going on.

They answer destructive comments, assuming shit, demanding shit. Are they trolls?

Are they being paid for causing chaos? It’s insane

My wife and I are aiming to break all of our belongings down as minimally as we can in order to be able to live on the road for a while (for a multitude of reasons.)

Within our budget and needs, we’ve decided on a NuCamp 320 teardrop trailer, which clocks in at just under 3,000 lbs unloaded. Her, myself and two pups all weigh 300 lbs together. Optimally, we’d like to start with just the vehicle first, and trailer later on as an upgrade.

We were initially looking at a toyota 4runner to pair with this given the advertised 1550 lbs of potential cargo capacity and tongue weight of the hitch. However in practicality, we saw no more than a max capacity of 880 lbs period in the door jams at the dealerships. Even in the off-road models, which just seemed… asinine? Using some calculators, that would seemingly give us very little-to-no wiggle room for any proper amount of livable necessities before we cross that threshold and run into myriad issues.

Now we’re wondering how people actually do it? Are we overthinking it? We did love the vehicle, but these numbers are waaay too close for comfort, seeing as most advice we find online generally recommends not crossing ~80% of the big number. We’ve begun looking at land cruisers as an alternative, but the way the market is right now, and the difference in cost for both new and used, it’s looking more and more infeasible. Don’t even get me started on the GX550.

Have you been through a similar situation? Any advice would be appreciated! 🤍

By new I mean original songs, not covers of older standards.

Maybe it's the flu I'm having but I had a funny "YouTube comment" on a Harry potter video, on my head and when I came up with it I giggle for a good 30 seconds, my torax started hurting (again due the flu)... Ouch

Well, I have a parent that is right on the edge of dislike that I keep them in my life for the sake of family harmony. But I consider them to be a bad person that makes me extremely uncomfortable to be around.

If you had something similar, and they died, how did it make you feel?

I'm purely curious because right now I feel like I would happy that they are out of my life, but sad for my family, but overall happier. And I want to understand if I'm being naive about the hardship of losing a parent, even a disliked one.
