It feels like everything is slowed down and nothing happens. I try to fill the time up with my hobbies and interests but can't because they don't feel satisfying on the weekend.

I'm a 45-year-old dude who's only now coming to grips with having probably lived my whole life with undiagnosed inattentive-type ADHD. My wife and online communities like this one (and formerly Reddit) have helped me see that I may have been playing life on hard mode by pretending I didn't have ADHD.

My doctor had me try Strattera (atomoxetine) about a year ago, but all it did was make me feel like I was nervous.

Have any of you inattentive-types had any success with simulant meds? I know it would be a lot of trouble to get officially diagnosed and even more trouble to fill the prescription, so I wonder if it's worth trying.

edit: Thank you everyone who shared their experience. It sounds like Adderall or Vyvanse are effective for focus and executive dysfunction. If anyone is still keeping tabs on this conversation, have you had any improvement in forgetfulness/distractedness with simulant meds?

I have a slight suspicion that every time I consume something with caffeine it has a specific effect on me.

A good cup of black or green tea: Slight headaches at some times.
A cup of coffee (from work coffee machine): Depending on strenght slight attention issues or headaches.
A cup of coffee from a coffee shop which roasts its own coffee: One time a bit of stronger attention issues than the work coffee.

I usually notice it right away after consuming.
But I also have a very strong issue with staying hydrated.
Usually drink 0.5-1l per day until I notice the usual dehydrated-headache or when I am really focused and loosing it at times.
Usually it's less prevelant at evening/night times.

Official diagnostic tests? (lemmy.myserv.one)
submitted 1 year ago by [email protected] to c/adhd

I want get myself an official diagnosis on ADHD and an answer regarding whether I'm autistic.

Typically, a "10 minute test" takes me several hours. I spend a great deal of time contemplating the questions, filled with indecision. So I want to fill out the test before I even get to the psychologist's office.

Which is why I plugged "official ADHD test" into a search engine, and got overwhelmed by the choices. And my main questions are:

  • do some websites offer a test they inaccurately describe as the official test? (If so, do those show up high on search results?)
  • do some websites offer the official test... and also augment the test with extra resources that help a cripplingly indecisive person answer more efficiently? (That would save me time.)

Hi, I'm new to lemmy and this is my first post. I've been diagnosed with adhd for a while now and I'm on medication. I've always had issues with memory and was wondering if this could have something to do with my ADHD, as taking the meds seems to help and it's only with small, simple things like what I did today or had for breakfast, sometimes even things I just saw or did seconds ago.

Hello, I am new here.

I am undiagnosed but have been essentially told by my therapist yeah you probably have ADHD, and suggested possibly being on the spectrum too. So I thought maybe this could be a good place to explore this issue I've noticed recently.

I mean stuff like personal appearance? It's fine, nobody will say anything negative and I know that, but thinking about changing my beard style or removing it all together or I'm a little bored with some of my clothing. But thinking about doing something about it, I just know everyone will have to address it and ask the same questions or make the same comments about it and, I don't know, like feel mentally exhausted just thinking about it.

Does anyone else experience this? It feels incredibly silly and annoying.

My wife brought ADHD Thrive Institute to our attention to help with our child (and me). We spoke with them over the phone but Iโ€™m getting a bad feeling about it, it feels very sales-y with their 3 step program, and they own brand of supplements etcโ€ฆ has anyone had experience with it?

Hi,

I realized as an adult that it's possible I have it and I want to learn more about it, both in order to better manage my symptoms, but also because I like learning. So my question to you is what resources are you using?

Personally, I prefer short articles and videos. Here is my list:

  1. Russell Barkley, PhD - Keep an eye for the weekly research updates.
  2. ADDitude Magazine - Their How to choose a professional to diagnose your ADHD article was super useful to me, but overall they have a bunch of good articles to read, and a youtube channel.
  3. Broadcasting ADHD Europe - Found them literally today, not much to share.
  4. How to ADHD - I have watched a bunch of videos, they are interesting and fun to watch. I am not sure how much I trust the information in this channel, please let me know if you have an opinion.
  5. Olivia Lutfallah - Mostly shorts.

Edit: I am reading ADHD 2.0, I highly recommend it. My favourite quote so far is "we shoot ourselves in the foot, only to discover a more efficient method to extract the bullet".

Some people use the pain of RSD to find adaptations and overachieve. They constantly work to be the best at what they do and strive for idealized perfection. Sometimes they are driven to be above reproach. They lead admirable lives, but at what cost?

I'm sure lots of ADHDers know what I mean. Situations where you're not meaning ill intent, but the way that a situation turns out makes it seem like you're the bad guy/girl.

How do you handle the situation without seeming like a victim or that you're making excuses for yourself? Do you explain the situation or just accept it and hope that enough time will reveal your true character?

I just started generic Focalin 5 days ago, 5mg once a day. It makes me feel wired, like I've had too much caffeine. I can't tell yet if it's helping with my concentration, and it doesn't hurt my mental state as far as I can tell, but I'm wondering if this physical jittery feeling will fade over time. I can't imagine feeling wired like this every day.

Depicted in the image is Sisyphus pushing his legendary boulder up a hill, written in the boulder are the words, "The fucking dishes and the fucking laundry."

End image description.

Straight up though I recently learned a really weird way of editing pictures for creative distortion (it involves Audacity (the sound editor)) and I straight up forgot to do both before work.

Yesterday and today.

Good news is I learned a lot on how editing those pictures works. Bad news is tonight's dinner was cereal eaten out of a mug with a fork.

Has anyone had any experience with this? The science sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it's worth the cost.

I take Ritalin 10mg on a needs basis since I generally have functioned 'alright' into adulthood.

Just took one to get some work done today and it still amazes me how normal I feel about doing work once I'm medicated. Like there's no massive hurdle to even starting. No massive reluctance and task paralysis to fight.

Coming from a whole week where I've been procrastinating on whatever isn't urgent, suddenly it's so easy to just... do.

I also get incredibly chatty (hence the post, lol), but yeah. I can't imagine how life changing it must be for people who struggle even worse with executive dysfunction.

I saw this post on x-twitter that explains this phenomenon which I really relate to:

ADHD and other auditory processing challenged brains will have a delayed ability to process auditory inputs.

But the brain has a pretty nifty feature that stores up to 2 seconds of auditory information... it's called the "phonological loop"

So, when a brain that struggles to process auditory info takes that info in... even though there's a delay in processing what that info means... it stays accessible for a short time to be processed when the brain is ready.

Cool, no?

I also ended up becoming a jack of all trades in the meantime

I just bought the new Spiderman Multiverse movie to watch with the family. The wife is sleeping through it and the kiddo loves it. But I'm to ADHD to sit through it. Ugh frustrating.
