Honestly, I think Matrix would be a better fit and be actually useable. A good alternative would be XMPP. They both should work great for the use case, both are FOSS and federated.

It failed because their business model was very stupid. Paying a hefty price for what should have been a F2P with paid cosmetics was it's doom.

However, I bet it would have had a hard time anyways even if they did everything right.

There's no chance Deadlock beats Rivals.

Rivals is simpler and is based on the world's most valuable franchise. It's the formula behind it's mass adoption. Deadlock requires the player to think more, and that alone makes it less popular than more braindead games.

I've been playing it since their public release and honestly, it feels worse than Overwatch, the animations are floaty, attacks look and sound weightless, it's the exact opposite to God of War for example. To give you an idea, it feels like a 90's MMO in that regard.

That said, it's a hell of a fun ride. There's a great amount of content, the mechanics are awesome, each character is a game on it's own, it has some of my favorite characters from the Marvel universe and some I didn't know about. Truly enjoyable, and the success it has been received with is well worth it. I hope they become sustainable, this game needs more polish but it has so much potential.
