I think what people forget as in the nu trek writing staff is something Ronald D Moore said about writing for TNG. Star Trek was one of the few shows that where they could do all the genres in a single season. One day it would be a western the next it can be a medical drama. The next a courtroom drama.

Most of the new shows it's the same story every season. There is a MacGuffin, the crew does a scavenger hunt to find said MacGuffin and that MacGuffin saves the universe.

TNG season 1 is a good start its rough around the edges and if it starts to look like the movie "Coming to America" go ahead and skip that episode. Just watch knowing it's going to get better like Park and Rec but it sets up a lot of storylines that will pay off later and some classic episodes that people forget are season 1 like "Datalore".

If you think about it and want to be cynical and game the system intentionally not making white men the protagonist. Will piss off right wingers. They boycot it and create a bunch of press then everyone else rush to your defense and you sell even more copies.
