Wartime manufacturing capacity would be my guess. Probably an element of self sufficiency too.
Shipbuilding capacity is just a fraction of China's now for example. Same goes for electronics.

I'm so old that I actually studied Latin in school though I wouldn't be surprised if my school still teaches it.
To be honest it was really useful as a base language for learning French and I've always found it easy to pick up bits quickly and get about easily in Spain and Italy as a result.
Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue though. Would not recommend as a Lingua Franca.

Beyond calls and texts I'm very selective with my YouTube "bell" subscriptions so I allow notifications there as I generally want to watch them.
Calendar. Banking apps. That's it.
All notifications are silent and have been forever. If it's important someone will call me, otherwise I don't want my phone to interrupt what I'm doing.
