Came over from Reddit as part of plan to divest from US-based products. Happy to be here, and plan to explore. Mainly lurked over on Reddit - hope to contribute more actively over here!

Yay to all the fresh lemmings. Welcome welcome! Just don't be a dipshit please.

A facebook friend who is transgender posted a list of alternate platforms to use instead of (ironically) Facebook, Google, Insta etc. And since I had recently been perma banned from reddit for twice quoting from The Godfather (I guess their algorithm hasn't seen it) and various djt related insults, I thought I'd give this a try.

Still looking around 😬

This is my first comment, just joined during the weekend. It took about half a day to get used to the lower amount of stuff and the slower pace here. And I really like it! The quality of discourse here seems so much higher and with the lower amount of posts I find that I can take my time and not get overwhelmed. Should have joined years ago :-)

Welcome, glad to hear you like it!

Thanks.

I do like that the sub-lemmy is focused on Europe as a whole, the one on Reddit was labelled as EU

i do miss my niche communities on reddit, maybe i'll start some here, other than that lemmy is a good alternative to replace the popular feed on reddit.

Great, I've made myself right at home. As another user said I miss the smaller communities but it can only get better from here.

I’m a little bit confused still but haven’t had the time to read through any FAQs. I don’t know how to access my account in a web browser for example (I’m using an iPhone app now).

So thank you for those links! Will have a look.

The website you would go to in your desktop browser is feddit.nu.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Figure which server you are on then go to that url

So feddit.nu for u

Ok, that was almost embarrassingly easy 🙈😅 Thanks!

I just joined and i'm exploring right now. It's looking good ! Of course it will be easier in a few days but i'm honestly pleasantly surprised !

I like it so far :) Bit confusing sometimes and I'm still trying to find communities that I like and are active.

I hope that many more make the switch from reddit, but I can also see why some people might find the Initial setup confusing or anoying. I think it just takes some time to get used to Lemmy, so I hope a lot of people try it out and stay

Haven't checked Reddit much since creating this account. Thought I might use both but Lemmy is genuinely much better. The only thing I haven't figured out is how to visit the original instance from within voyager and how to make my feed more diverse. Currently it's very politics heavy and I don't wanna unsub from those communities but other stuff kinda gets burried.

The only thing I haven't figured out is how to visit the original instance from within voyager

Top left of your feed, hit the arrow and at the top left you'll see the option to view only subscribed or all posts on your local instance (or all posts from all instances).

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 hours ago

I would use two accounts, one dedicated to non politics communities

[email protected] can help discover some of them

[–] [email protected] 22 points 4 hours ago (5 children)

Still learning where to find stuff, and unfortunately most of "my" subreds aren't here (yet), but it looks promising and will continue to support.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 24 minutes ago

You can use the universal https://lemmyverse.net/ to see if your favourite communities exist.

[–] Aliktren 12 points 4 hours ago

Yeah pretty much but weaning off reddit is good

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Feel free to recreate your favourite and try to grow it here :).

[email protected] is a decent resource for that.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 hours ago

Also consider joining more general communities

[email protected] is a community for all Japanese RPGs for instance

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Welcome ! Indeed, niche topics need a larger userbase, hopefully we'll get there over time

[–] vatlark 2 points 3 hours ago

sometimes they have different names.

you can also create any community you are missing. If you use the same name as the reddit community then people will be more likely to find it and contribute.

I like how Lemmy actually grew in size after i left it after the Reddit moderation problem of a couple years ago. All in all, it's all kind of overwhelming but maybe I'm too emotional.
