From login/paywalled Financial Times article that this is citing:

Data from Similarweb shows active daily users in the UK have dropped from 8mn a year ago to only around 5.6mn now, with more than a third of that fall coming since the summer riots.

  • Require you to type the instance before you can start typing your credentials.
    • This complicates things and adds an extra step. This also wouldn't completely solve the problem.

First thought in a similar vein to this, have a pause for credential & instance review before passing them along?

E.g. Type everything in as-is, but instead of log in promptly sending anything, it displays all the information you just entered again with some simple message like, "Does everything here look correct?" and Yes/No or something of the sort.

It complicates things and adds a step as well, however I think it would do a better job of encouraging people to double-check for any typos than what you mention in what I've quoted above. Bonus of this idea is that it also keeps external ties to a minimum.

Friendly heads up, Beehaw is defederated from Lemmy World, so this won't reach them.

You might post this over to these communities though:

As noted, seeing as they're neither consistently active nor terribly large (Adulting is the largest of the two with any posts), building them on other instances now would probably be just as well. They're decent enough topics to try to build communities around imo.

throwing knives (which just seem to breed like rabbits and accumulate in droves)

Every time they're thrown, even just into storage, another emerges from the Forge of Being.

This may be related to the version your instance is on and Thunder adjusting to accommodate different vote display options that your instance version allows for. You might look through Thunder's settings regarding display and see if there's an option to restore the display of vote counts.

Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if it's offered as a part-time job, but you might look into localization jobs. Sometimes (often?) they may be the same exact job, but in the situations that they're not it may help to find jobs you might otherwise miss.

The problem with AI translations with some languages is that their results can be far too literal and miss much needed nuance to deliver the desired message, so: localization. Like you said, translation, especially good translation, is an art, and a major part of that is in localizing the translations for different audiences.

Delayed response, but there's a few that I'm aware of that may roughly fit this interest.

Same idea but different instance:
~~[email protected]~~

Lastly there's [email protected], but this is more for seeking product recommendations rather than providing reviews of products. However currently there's nothing in their rules prohibiting product review posts, so you could always DM the mod to see if they're open to them.

Edited & crossed out first couple communities as I reviewed the original thread and saw they weren't what you were after. I also see that you've made a community tailored to what you were looking for via [email protected], which is apt. Best of luck with it!

Thanks! This tool seems really useful. It's interesting how patchy service availability seems to be even in urban areas. 😕

Ah yeah, ya see, flip that switch and you bathe the computer with some extremely excited electrons

IT people don't want ya to know it, but computers love electron baths. Takes them to a whole new level of performance!

First comment. Not from Flagstaff but hopefully this helps others there or thereabouts find their way here!

Icon/banner resolutions? (self.moderators)
submitted 2 years ago by ElectroVagrant to c/moderators

I've been toying around with this for awhile now and even as I thought I had a good idea of the right scale for icons/banners, Lemmy's tripped me up.

Searched in other communities & looked on other instances at some of their community icons/banners that look good, but there doesn't appear to be much consistency. You see some 512x512 icons right alongside 256x256 icons and they both tend to look okay.

However in trying to emulate this with some images, I find the "previews" to be unhelpful, appearing to clip or sometimes stretch them.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Lately I've been using Feeder on Android, but there's an awkward bug when returning to a feed (jumping either above or below the tapped article) that has me looking about for alternatives.

I'm aware of Feedly and Inoreader, but tend to prefer my RSS readers running locally/on-device if possible.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You may have heard of third places before, but in case it's new to you, they're essentially community spaces where you can chill & socialize...Like here, I suppose! But typically they refer to in-person community spaces.

Does your area of the world still have a number of these, or are they in the decline? Do you know if your in-person communities are trying to establish or renovate theirs to help people connect or reconnect with one another?

I didn't really intend to get into moderating communities here, much like I imagine many others didn't, but since I'm doing so, I can't help noticing the mod tools are pretty basic.

Some improvements I think I'd like would probably be:

  • View modlog by community, so when you click the modlog at the bottom of a community's sidebar, it filters down to that community.
  • An option to review a moderated post's contents without having to go to the modlog. This would be really useful in moderation teams to see why your teammates removed/moderated a post/comment.
  • A separate suspend option for misconduct that's not outright banworthy. I've seen some bans in modlog that suggest it may be used like suspending, but that's not really intuitive imo.
  • Multiple post/comment selection. Right now this is pretty low priority, but if ever waves of spam come up, this would be pretty critical to clearing out spam.

These are just a few that come to mind. What are some others you've had occur to you?

Recently I've tried to make posts & comments to a couple remote instances (slrpnk.net & just now sh.itjust.works), and while they appear to post correctly (not getting stuck on spinning create/submit circle), they never appear on the remote instance.

In the case of posting to slrpnk.net I gave it a couple days before posting this, as I know sometimes federation can be finicky (and it's hard to tell whether it's your end or their end). With sh.itjust.works, I admittedly haven't given it much time yet (only just posted), but from experience I know typically the delay isn't that long unless something may be going awry.

I only noticed this happening after @[email protected] disabled federation debugging to address posting delays. Perhaps it's mere coincidence?

Still, I thought it worth reporting, as I suspect some may not have realized it just yet as they're still getting used to things around here & may only be posting to local Lemmy.World communities.

Edit: I did another test just now with a comment over on a lemmy.one thread which did federate promptly (albeit the edit's taking its time carrying over), so now I'm really not sure what may be going on here.

Of the three, I'd think slrpnk.net should have the fewest delays, being a smaller instance, whereas I understand the delay with sh.itjustworks, but then I see that it appears it may have roughly a similar amount of folks to lemmy.one...So, yeah. Situation's unclear.

An interesting post going over the history of the social bookmarking site Delicious.

It's not comprehensive as it was mainly for the author's own research, but it's a compelling read all the same imo.

The Restless Wind (self.lemmyscareyou)

Some folks sleep to the silence, some to the gentle sounds of a fan, and on nights when nature is kind, to the steady sound of the rain. I'm among those folks that enjoys a gentle sound as I try to doze, but for the past few nights, it's as if someone had insulted nature itself and my house was caught in their wrath.

There wasn't a moment's silence to speak of as the breeze turned to gales as the sun went down, and the treetops bristled loudly. Worse, the branches of the trees nearest my home kept hammering the walls, some sounding as if they were even sweeping the shingles off the roof. Yet each morning, as the sun rose, each tree remained unbroken, the house itself undamaged, and not a fallen branch in sight.

It made no sense, but then, trees have endured the world's winds for ages...More surprising was that the house hadn't been wrecked, given the horrific sounds that kept me awake.

Finally, one sleepless night of this raucous rampage, I decided to get up and try to uncover just what was stirring each night. Nothing natural occurs with this sort of consistent intensity...Does it?

As I made my way to the door, I looked through the windows to make sure it wasn't all in my mind, and sure enough, it looked as if a great storm was blowing outside...Again. The house groaned as it was assailed by the gusts, and I began to rethink even trying to step outside. What could I even do if I did find...Something, something that could create such a force?

I didn't know, but it didn't matter, as whatever this was, it was keeping me from sleeping regardless, so it was either face it or let exhaustion overcome me.

I had to force the door open just to get out. The door kept almost slamming shut as I tried to get out, as if my home was attempting to hold me inside and keep me safe. I should have given in to its attempts.

Once outside, the trees that had seemed subject to the winds began to make earsplitting cracking sounds, as though they were breaking from the nights of relentless battery...Yet they weren't breaking. They...were...They hadn't looked themselves I realized, they weren't what I saw in the daylight.

They were...Becoming what I saw in the day, just...Ordinary trees, but...They weren't. I wanted to see what they really were, but before I realized it, I was out of breath. I blacked out.

I awoke the next day outside, and everything was as it always was in the daylight...Yet as night fell, I no longer heard the restless winds, but now...I heard my own voice, speaking hoarsely, urgently, for what I could not understand, and I daren't give in...

Feedbro add-on! (self.rssfeeds)
submitted 2 years ago by ElectroVagrant to c/rssfeeds

Some great resources already here, so I thought I'd chip in and mention Feedbro, an add-on available on Firefox, Chrome, Vivaldi, and Edge.

It's a RSS feed reader in your browser that doesn't require an account, but if you're kinda weird like me, I mainly use it for finding RSS feeds on web pages then adding them to a separate RSS reader.

With RSS being more & more buried on some sites, this is a super useful tool for finding otherwise hidden RSS feeds imo.

Sort of posting here with the odd hope of drawing some eyes to this space, and because, uh...I'd really be interested in if anyone that sees this may have insights into fixing up shoes and boots.

I'd make a distinct community for the subject but I have zero knowledge of the matter, and I'd post elsewhere, but their communities are more specifically focused (e.g. tech/automobiles/etc.).

Any sort of insight/advice from say, patching holes or rejoining the upper part to the bottom (blanking on the right terms here) or whathaveyou.

I've seen occasional comments from folks here where the avatar appears broken, and when going directly here, I found some community icons are likewise...

Checked another browser to make sure and they're more obviously broken viewed through it, so uh...What's up? Did Lemmy change accepted image formats at some point that broke a bunch of'em here?
