There's also this:
https://frontpage.fyi/

Not sure which of the two has been around longer, but looks like frontpage is also pretty slow going.

Been awhile since I've felt inclined to extend some timeouts to anyone for light rule violations and was surprised to find that the only options for timeouts/temp bans appear to be for a day or more.

This isn't a case of overlooking anything, is it? Or some hidden setting where you could put 1h or 1 hour and have it apply?

A day minimum for what's intended as a timeout feels excessive, but if it's the only option anymore. ๐Ÿ˜•

I believe they're backseat moderating given my replies to a couple other posts here recently, where I reminded people of Rule 4, where we encourage people to provide some context, opinion, or adjustment of title to encourage discussion.

See:

  1. Link posts should include some context/opinion in the body text when the title is unaltered, or be titled to encourage discussion.

The aim of this rule is not to be told how to think or what opinion one should have, but exactly what it says: encourage discussion. Article/document links without any context or indication of why OP's sharing it don't really do that. It's similar to someone randomly handing out flyers or pamphlets somewhere.

In any event both of you are violating rule 2, and this makes OP's second time this week doing this, so I'll be handling this accordingly.

Pretty sure it may be Ex Machina.

[โ€“] ElectroVagrant 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Would you add some body text, context/opinion/summary, in accordance with rule 4?

[โ€“] ElectroVagrant 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately this has Denuvo to restrict your use of your purchase. Was hoping after their first title getting criticized for this they may have changed course on that, but appears not.

Would recommend waiting till that's removed, maybe in a GOG release.

Would you add some context/opinion to the body text to bring this in line with rule 4, to better invite discussion?

Some levels are tricky, but it's also pretty exciting when you build up speed in others. Worth a try if you're into these types of games in my opinion.

Not that it hurts to have multiple active communities around a topic, but as a heads up, there's a more active variation of this community at [email protected].

Extra Ordinance is a topdown wave shooter where you play as the mech shown in the image with a few different weapons to switch between, as well as a dash that smashes through tunnel walls.

Camera's rough, but all things considering it's a pretty fun little game. Friendly heads up, this may not run well on less powerful hardware, PC or mobile.

Pretty much, yeah. Buried by marketing and mostly kept that way by it dominating conversations.

Been occasionally posting creative commons music and some fully free games to try to be the change I want to see.

Technically it may be, in terms of library.

However there are a few alternatives to look into that, while not matching the scale of their library, still have enough to consider.

For older anime there's Retrocrush, which offers a fair amount of shows to watch for free (but with ads), no account required. Some are only accessible with an account and via subscription, however.

Interestingly though, some of those shows are available on other services no subscription required, like Tubi or Pluto.

Speaking of, it turns out Crunchyroll apparently cut a deal with Pluto, so there's a Crunchyroll channel on there where you can catch some of their anime freely (again, with ads though). Besides that there's also a separate anime channel and a few dedicated marathon channels to more popular series like Naruto, One Piece, Sailor Moon, etc.

There's also lower amounts still to be found on the other general streaming services like Netflix or Hulu, but it obviously doesn't fully compare.

Also while not newer and their library is way smaller, for some anime movies you might see if your local libraries offer digital services like Hoopla or Kanopy. With those you may be able to check out some great anime movies.

Link, may not be available in all regions because corporations like to leave money on the table squabbling over who gets the most money from their agreements.

Twin Peaks is a surreal mystery series that aired in the '90s created by Mark Frost and David Lynch. A young woman is killed in the small town of Twin Peaks and the upbeat and unusual FBI agent Dale Cooper is tasked with aiding in solving the mystery of her murder.

However Twin Peaks is a small town full of its own oddities that are gradually revealed throughout the show.

Everness

Saw a video the other day of someone exploring the biomes from this, and the crystal forest biome is a cool sight. The sunlight refracts through the crystal tree leaves like a prism in a really cool touch.

What to call this stuff...

Jokingly:
webweb, 'cause it's a web of websites.
cross-fora, 'cause they're like cross-posts but entire forums.
newsvents, 'cause a lot of the activity is venting in news post comments. ๐Ÿ˜‰
memecycling centers, 'cause it's a lot of reposts of old memes/shitposts.

Realistically:
Whatever instance/site I'm directing someone to.

stick-in-the-mud-tangentI'd never tell someone to go to WordPress if I was telling them to go to a site built with Wordpress, that'd be silly and out of touch. It'd also be out of touch to use some jargon that means nothing to them like "threadiverse".

All the pointing to these backends as though they're platforms like the corporate platforms shows how much they've conditioned people into thinking in their terms. The major benefit to these backends is they're more open, enabling greater mobility between the instances of them/sites built with them.

Try to learn more, focus on creative/constructive approaches or outlets (not necessarily artistic in nature, but may be).

Sometimes I'll read into history for something or other and find myself mildly amused and sort of relieved to see how familiar the accounts are. Of course it would be better if they weren't so familiar, but it goes to show things aren't freshly awful. It's a lot of the same old garbage we've yet to effectively deal with, same as ever, but we have been dealing with it.

In other words, I try to take steps to regain perspective to recognize there's as much, if not at times more, good to experience than bad, and even if I struggle to find much good, I can try to make my own sort of good to keep myself going.

It may sound bizarre, given how much so many use the web today, but it's worth recognizing how many don't think of the web at all anymore. It's their social media app of choice, it's Google, it's some streaming services or YouTube.

The wider web, and the ability to participate in and build independent parts of it oneself, is an almost unheard of idea to many.

So trying to think of some tools/ways to ease them in, a few things come to mind.

Tools

  • Publii for a basic WYSIWYG sitebuilding tool that can run on a local machine, offline.

  • Zonelets an in-between blogging tool that also runs on a local machine, offline, but has one adjusting some pre-written html and javascript.
    • Zoner, a static site generator to build Zonelets-style blogs without getting into the html/javascript, processes markdown files into html and produces a RSS feed if desired.

By now I've mostly (I think) gotten used to some of Lemmy's quirks, but one caught me a little off guard a moment ago related to the search. Admittedly I was trying to be a little lazy, but I think that's fortuitous as many likely take this approach.

I was trying to search to see if a video was posted here before posting it, as I try to avoid making repeat posts especially in the same community.

So I went to search with the default search settings, copied the video's url into the search and ran it.

Despite the default search type being All, which I think many would expect to include searching by all types (posts/comments/communities/users/url), it seems to exclude url. I found this out as I saw only one comment with the video url and no posts, and so went ahead and posted only to see afterward all the cross-posts to other communities.

In a similar way, searching with the All setting for communities feels clunky, as if one searches by a community name without an exclamation mark, it will only show up as mentioned in comments (if it's been mentioned). There's no sort of fuzzy search to have a direct link to the community display in the results.

These are just a couple stumbling blocks in the default web UI that have been around for awhile, but caught my attention again.

Remembered there was documentation, and understood it a little better this time around!

TwoLineJoy explainerdecided to try out this idea of tagging posts here with potential community idea to test the waters and put to practice using General as an incubator/launchpad for other communities.
