Reddit Sync Revanced patch (self.syncforlemmy)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Moohamin12 to c/syncforlemmy

Hi All,

If anyone still wants to use Reddit Sync there was a post up on the Reddit page for the Revanced patch. In case you might want to stick to Sync till the Lemmy app launches.

Here is the tutorial shared by the creator, u/KobeW50

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wHvqQwCYdJrQg4BKlGIVDLksPN0KpOnJWniT6PbZSrI/preview?pli=1

I tried it and it worked. You can try it on Sync Pro if you have the apk.

I am pasting u/hihowareyou0_0's simple guide.

-Go to https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps Click on "Are you a developer? create an app..." Give it any name. Set it as "installed app." IMPORTANT: Set " redirect uri " to http://redditsync/auth create the app. TAKE NOTE OF THE CLIENT SECRET (the gibberish text and numbers below the Name) Go to any Text editor (I use an app called "just notes") Copy + paste the client secret. (And nothing else.) Save the file and call it " reddit_client_id_revanced.txt " MAKE SURE TO NOT SAVE IT ON ANY Folder, JUST THE INTERNAL STORAGE/ROOT Download (not install) this sync for reddit apk Install & open Revanced Manager Make sure all permissions are enabled (Especially " All files access ") Go to the "settings" tab. Enable "experimental patches support." Restart revanced manager Go to the "Patcher" tab. Click on " Select an application. " Then CLICK ON "Storage" and select the .apk we downloaded. Click on "select a patch." Select " Change Oauth Client ID" (and optionally "disable ads") click on done. Then finally click on "patch." Now wait for it to patch and install the patched apk! If it asks you to update, DON'T. (just a warning)

Honestly I'd rather just have an excuse to use reddit less

I've been trying to read more. At lunchtime, for example, where I'd usually scroll endlessly through reddit for an hour, I've now for a book open.

Same. I've gone back to reddit just once and kinda regretted it tbh

My issue with going back is Reddit doesn't WANT me back. I'm not wanted there. I was intentionally cut out from using the site because I use a 3rd party app exclusively. Why would I go where I'm obviously not wanted? I feel wanted here. The sync developer is making an app for Lemmy. I'm wanted here, people want me to make content, and interact in the comments. Why would I want to go back to Reddit?

I stopped using it completely. Used it only through Sync and am not missing it.

or... just switch to Lemmy?

This looks like we weren't reddit users but reddit addicts if we are willing to jump over the hoops to continue using it.

The fact is that author of the app is no longer supports it, so this will work for short amount of time, but starting there we:

  1. Produce content for them
  2. Likely will switch to their app once it stops working or they will start blocking this
  3. We are less likely contributing to other communities, resulting, less content here and making it harder to switch

99% of social media/content stuff is basically another form of addiction.

But it's such a difficult habit to break. The "good stuff" is literally a click away, and is socially acceptable to indulge in, or HUGELY encouraged in almost all walks* of life: by companies who use it to advertise, necessary in order to do basic things these days, or your friends/family asking why you didn't react to their latest pics on Facebook. Some other examples of this: get a job by having a good LinkedIn profile, get support by complaining publicly on twitter, getting support through Discord.

I agree completely.

This is more for those that might still want some minor access for the time being to have a workable solution than that awful shit official app.

I'm glad someone was dedicated enough to do this but frankly this is too much work for that website. Moving away from the huge social media companies will be healthier for the internet and they are nothing without users. Best they remember that.

Fuck Reddit, I'll be deleting my post and comment history, and post here the few that should be preserved.

[โ€“] Magister 2 points 2 years ago

This is what I did, I used Redact to delete 13 years of posts and comments. I uninstall Sync on my cellphone and replaced it at the same place on my screen with Jerboa, so I click on it by reflex :)

This is good. But I'm so mad that I don't want to use that website anymore (at least for now)

[โ€“] ondra5 4 points 2 years ago

You could also just get the APK file from APK mirror. But after trying the official one (patched mind you) I uninstalled it, it's just too bad. If lemmy needed any advertisment, I'd say that the official Reddit app is doing a pretty good job at it.

Looks like it's not working

[โ€“] Maruki_Hurakami 2 points 2 years ago

I had to turn wifi off for it to work. Worth a try

I can't get the YT or Sync revanced to work. YT aborts and Sync can't find the patch.

I tried this patch pre shutdown expecting it to work once the API change went into effect, but then it didn't. I tinkered around for a little bit but then decided since I'm already on Lemmy I'm going to fully commit to just being here. Going through my reddit account sometime this week when I have time to get any info I want and then deleting my account.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I tried it and it didn't work. I'm not sure if that's because I only have the final updated version of Sync Pro. I was really disappointed.

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I owned Sync pro but ended up backing up my config and then Patching the standard Sync app with ad blocking enabled. Works a treat for now.

[โ€“] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Yeah... I considered it. And then decided that not only was Reddit no longer worth the effort, but that I actively want to prevent them from using any of my content for their benefit, so I overwrote and deleted my entire comment history. Now I'm waiting a few days to see if they restore them, because apparently that's the level of bull that Reddit is now stooping to, and if I delete my account I won't be able to nuke my comments again.

But I fully understand why someone would be inclined to do all of that. I very nearly kept at it. In the end, I no longer trust them at all as a platform.
