You can get really good weather proof zips that wont fail like a 'zip-loc bag' would. The seals on those bags fail bad if they get a bend or kink in them

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I have a nice rain jacket and the pockets fold over with a flap on top. Pretty legit.
There are some plastic bags that are meant to be long lasting but I have my doubts about how well they’d work on a jacket. What is the use case you’re imagining, exactly?
ziplock style requires you to pinch both sides to close. it also requires you to pull both sides to open. on wearables the fabric isnt easily pinchable from both sides, you would be forced to smear it hard against your soft supple flesh to close it. a wearable pocket shouldnt require two hands to open/close because your other hand is usually occupied with the item worth storing, etc.
really we should be using silent velcro by now but the US military wont let us.
Just a note for the Velcro; I ran across this video ages ago and found it really helps with keeping that ripping noise from being too audible

They make zipper-style ziplocs with sliders, no need for pinching or stretching.

As long as the jacket’s properly constructed the pockets should be just as watertight as the rest of the outer shell.
When purchasing a raincoat, you can look at the pocket stitching and zipper model to try to gauge how it’ll hold up (or just buy it, experiment on it, and return it if it fails).
Not exactly ziploc, but there is Tizip. But as others have said, a properly designed pocket won't have an issue. Maybe you will need to close the zipper on it during an absolute deluge.
Waterproof zippers exist, and are already often used in raincoats. Much more robust and easier to use than Ziploc.
I've come to the conclusion that I have just been buying poor quality rain jackets
I wear a 1970's Us military jacket as my outdoor coat and it has snaps on all the pockets and a rain hood zipped into the collar. Thick as fuck too.
Those field coats are great. A lot of them have liners you can zip/button into them to make them even warmer. Mine isn't waterproof but I've put quite a bit of tent/boot waterproofing spray on it so it'll shed most stuff.
