Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

Also, AFAIK, configuring NoScript and only allowing youtube and ytimg to load works.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

uBlock can also block Javascript just like NoScript

Ad blockers work fine, what do you mean? Youtube lost, their next big idea wont even try kicking in until next year.

[–] [email protected] 44 points 1 year ago

As others have said, adblockers do still work on YouTube. Specifically, uBlock Origin works great on YouTube, as long as you don't use it with any other adblockers.

Also if you're using Chrome, stop using Chrome. uBlock Origin still works on Chrome most of the time but Google is doing their best to kill it off. Switch to Firefox.

Ad blockers do still work on YouTube if you switch to Firefox. Aternatiely you ca n try out some 3rd party YouTube front end websites like invidious and piped. Just try out a few different instances each are a little different and some may work better than others.

I personally like vid.puffyan.us for invidious and piped.video for piped.

[–] SinningStromgald 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There is also the app FreeTube for desktops as well.

And Newpipe + Sponsor Block for phones. Downside is there are no playlists. Upside no ads or sponsor nonsense and you can download.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

You can create playlists on NewPipe

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago (7 children)

You don't.

You'll take whatever cock daddy capitalism shoves down your throat and you'll damn well like it.

Or use an adblocker.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Soooooo I'm liking option B).

edit: or you could leave and reclick on the video

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Sorry to nitpick, but it's Ublock Origin. I know autocorrect hates "ublock"

When the ad is playing you may see Sponsored X:XX and a little i in a circle in the lower left corner. Click the i. This will give you the ability to block or report the ad as appropriate. It will also show you what category has been associated to you as to why you received the ad, you can say if you want more or less ads of that category.

The iOS mobile app has a bug currently where you need to quit the app and come back after doing this, but it does block the ad and you won’t see that particular cut of the ad again. Unfortunately unless it’s a mid-video ad, or from a channel you’re subscribed to you will lose the video you’re watching as it hasn’t made it into your play history yet. But if the ad was mid-video your video can be resumed via history. For clarity, the video still exists, it’s just hit or miss if the video will be in the curated randomness they present you for you to try starting the video again.

I wouldn't know, haven't seen an ad on youtube in like 10 years.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)
  1. Tap and hold on the YouTube app icon
  2. Press "Delete"
  3. Confirm any following prompts
[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Worked perfectly! Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Its not possible to “downvote” ads but you can still block them by using ublock origin on firefox

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Just use newpipe or something similar. I haven't used the actual YouTube app in years there's literally no reason to

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Here's a creative way to do it.

  1. Print out the downvote symbol and a screenshot of the ad.
  2. Dip the paper in dog shit to emphasize that the ad is a shitpost.
  3. Send it to 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway Mountain View, CA 94043.
  4. ????
  5. Profit.

the ad center in your account would be where you would tweak what kind of ads you get.

It's in data and privacy. https://myadcenter.google.com/home

[–] mhague 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You can affect the ads by finding normal ads around the internet (served by Google) and telling Google what is and isn't relevant to you.

However, Google seems to allow advertisers to lie and game their system. Ie PragerU will advertise some "trans is bad" "children's book" schlock, labeled as "video games."

When you're already sucking it up and trying to fairly engage with Google, it's disheartening to see they don't even pay attention to what they serve people.

[–] echo64 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So this comment kind of misunderstands how the Google ad system works for youtube.

When you click on a video, Google presents you, and the video you are watching (with categories associated with you and the video) to an auction. Advertisers then bid on your view, and whoever has the highest bid wins, you see their ad. This is all automated and happens in the blink of an eye, but that's the basic system.

This means that parties that want to show ads to you will get to, no matter your preferences.

[–] mhague 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This is for the interstitials right? It's a separate system than the ones on the side?

Edit: I just went off this: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7403255?hl=en

It sounds like they're talking about ads in the video.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Knocking on wood, but at the moment ublock origin+ firefox still do the trick ? Well get the warning twice sine they start fighting adblocker, so it may change at some point.

But indeed, I should use youtube less, I pay for spotify, but sometimes use as a source for music, I tend to then fall on clickbaits video especially when cooking.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Short answer: You can’t

Slightly longer answer: Report it as offensive, dangerous, or porn

ETA: Best answer: As already mentioned, use FF + uBO

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

adblocks works source: me using firefox and ublock origin, i only got the "we detect you are using adblock" message two times, and it was a month ago(also revanced on android)

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

There is usually a little circled i somewhere on the ad you click and select "this ad is not relevant to me."

It won't actually do anything, though and the same thing can be accomplished by going into your Google settings and turning off targeted ads in general.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

What platform?

The platforms I use, Android, Android TV and desktop, all have working and easy to install ad blocking options.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

koff koff

if your account is banned for adblocker (like one of mine) make new a account and it still works. (firefox, not sure about others)

pain in the ass to resub, but better than watching ads on the channels i have not whitelisted.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How do you get your account banned for adblock?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

aparently i cannot upload a pic in the reply, might be a lemmy issue, might be me, i have been puffin lots today lol

but yeah, i get the 'violates tos' warning on every video, no matter the video. yet i swap over to my birds youtube and no issues at all. i dont even have to leave the page of that video, literally just swap accounts. I can still upload content to that account, but i cant even view my own videos while on that account.

Id be happy to screen record, post it to my birds youtube and show you what i mean.
