2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.

What is the first browser and all apps except f Droid under "newborn paranoid"?

I guess I'm just a normie with some conservatism in him. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

    [–] TheFrirish 1 points 2 years ago

    It's better than nothing already.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago

Gentoo, but no Qubes OS? Not based 🧐

[–] Junfoo 4 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Dang, I just got stereotyped so hard as the tech conservative. Right on the nose with zorinOS and brave/firefox lmao

    [–] pHr34kY 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

The only tech normie icon I have installed on any personal devices is whatsapp. The rest are pure cancer.

I tick a few boxes across the rest of that spectrum. I land mostly in tech conservative.

    [–] MooseBoys 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I spend 95% of my day on Debian but I don’t like it. Definitely β€œTech Normie” according to this guide.

    A mix between #2 and #5.

    [–] croobat 2 points 2 years ago

Newborn paranoid all the way. Qutebrowser rules!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Am a tech conservative that watched Stallman's Ted talk and watch(Ed) luke smiths. Not not gonna lie tho luke is maybe a bit wacko but he's entertaining and often brings interesting points .

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

    I'm between the two paranoids.

    [–] WarlordSdocy 2 points 2 years ago

I occasionally go down to newborn paranoid but almost always get drawn back up to tech conservative cause of either convenience or cause there's some program I need that forces me back up.

    [–] ricdeh 2 points 2 years ago

Lol last one is extremely funny. But I'm also probably covering the spectrum from "tech conservative" to "tech paranoid", ticking boxes of each of the three

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

    Definitely tech conservative

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Tech conservative, with a bit of full-blown tech paranoid. I come across as a weird combination of tech-savvy and complete luddite for the laundry list of services I don't use. Not because they're proprietary, but because they offer me nothing I want.

    Disclaimer: I use Arch, btw.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

mainly newborn paranoid, yet i have some qualities from tech conservative or tech paranoid

    [–] Weylandyuta 2 points 2 years ago

I feel like a weirdo compared to this scale. I use Ubuntu on my desktop and steamos on the steam deck but I also main chrome for my browser because as much as everyone else hates Google (rightly so) I actually don't mind their browser and I like the centralization of their services tied with having a Gmail account. And I have a pixel 4a. I'm weirdly into tech but I'm mostly a software Luddite.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I use chrome and windows 11. So I am a normie according to this :/

I'd say I'm tech conservative although I am using Debian on my laptop.

    [–] ellesper 2 points 2 years ago

Bits and pieces in every single category, lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

I have moved from the left side (tech normie) only it was DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1 (apple was something you ate back then in the UK) to Tech Paranoid today with aspirations to fully become an FSF member

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

This made me laugh more than it probably should

    [–] repungnant_canary 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So this is only somewhat related... But right now using Tor for normal work can be inconvenient because (i. a.) it has slower transfer speeds due to limited number of nodes. But I'm wondering, if in a hypothetical world where Tor takes over majority of internet, could it offer similar convenience as currently non-Tor internet, just anonymous?

    [–] deepdive 2 points 2 years ago

What's make me suspicious about TOR network, is that most of the end nodes are controlled by the US government... And because it was first build for the US army.

If only people would switch to I2P, this would greatly improve anonimity !

    [–] dditty 1 points 2 years ago

For me is bits and pieces of tech conservative, newborn paranoid, and tech paranoid.

    [–] Laura 1 points 2 years ago

Im probably somewhere between the first four panels. I’m debating about at least partly using Chromium again since some stuff I do doesn’t work on FF and like macOS and Windows the most since they (mostly) just work out of the box. However I’m not comfortable with WhatsApp etc, am using Ubuntu and Arch on some machines and do prefer Open source for some software categories. And for some stuff I’m manually checking the source code and am compiling it myself since I’m paranoid. (Mostly password manager and similar).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I'm some mix of the last 3

    [–] Sheltr 1 points 2 years ago

    I'm split between 1 and 2

    [–] Necropill 1 points 2 years ago

i'm definetly newborn paranoid, but i actually belive opera and opera GX are great browsers nowdays

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

    newborn paranoid for me

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

    I'm a tech conservative... 😏

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

Firefox has better ad-blocking capability than qutebtowser, and I'd use both for different purposes, if I wasn't a lazy bum that CBA to bind two browser keyboard shortcuts. I could use qutebrowser to view ad-free documentation sites, but meh.
I use arch btw, specifically because of the healthy pragmatism towards proprietary software.
I love FOSS, don't get me wrong, but there's worthwhile stuff besides Nvidia drivers that I'm not willing to part with. I don't even have an Nvidia card.
