Couple of observations/predictions.

  • Checo is gone from RB end of this year.
  • De Vries doesn’t last the week
  • Sergeant doesn’t last the month
  • Alonso will do a brill soundbite on how talented Lance is
  • Verstappen will win
[–] pantslesswonder 11 points 1 year ago

the ongoing downfall of Checo is really astounding. Maybe I'm just losing perspective on his performance because his teammate is checks notes on track to be one of the true GOATs, but it really seems like he's been beefing it.

I think everyone is overreacting on checo. He is in 2nd place and red bull will win everything this year. I doubt they will end his contact early if this is still the scenario by the end of the year. He will be gone after 2024 though.

[–] Coelacanth 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think people who claim he'll be gone over the summer are overreacting for sure. There is no need for RB to be that drastic. He has, however, been pretty underwhelming, and I think Red Bull will for sure consider their options going into '24. They can afford to give him the rest of the season to sort himself out, but if they expect other teams to be able to close the gap sooner rather than later then they need a number 2 who is more consistent.

What baffles me the most is that he was incredibly on point in the first 4 races. Nobody believed that he was actually gonna challenge Max, but he really delivered. And then comes his traditional mid season slump that he has every year for some reason

[–] Coelacanth 1 points 1 year ago

At this point it's pretty clearly at least partially psychological. Which in itself isn't great. He was on the pace today for the first time in months, but could he maintain a cool head and just keep it between the lines in Q2? No, he just had to push the limit to try to prove himself.

[–] Venicon 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Agree. He will see out the season then prob Danny Ricc back in with a clear number 2 status

[–] Thewheeeeeeeeeel 2 points 1 year ago

My bets are on buying out Norris. Ric is just not good enough

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

my money is on Danny going to AT, but hey who knows

[–] other_koala 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Man, as a Mexican, I had some serious hopium earlier in the year that Checo could have a chance at winning the Mexican GP, that's my dream lol...

But now, I think i'll be lucky if he even gets to participate in that race.

[–] Venicon 1 points 1 year ago

Suerte, amigo, suerte. Soy escoces, no tenemos un conductor 😭

[–] Rob 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

With a little bit of luck Max will have won the WDC once Mexico runs around and will take the weekend off to go sim racing. That might give Checo a chance.

[–] The_one_and_only 1 points 1 year ago

If he keeps missing Q3, it's not just Max who is faster than him.

[–] Coelacanth 1 points 1 year ago

Not that Sargeant has been outstanding or anything, but this weekend I believe Albon had the upgraded car (that clearly seems improved) and Sargeant didn't. He was actually on a decent lap too before getting too cautious in sector 3. He still might not be good enough for F1 in the end, but I don't think he's doing as bad as some people say, and certainly not as bad as De Vries. He's occasionally shown glimpses of pace, at least.

[–] Flippanteer 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

LET'S GO LANDO! Seems like the upgrades are working well! I hope he can get a mega result after last race.

[–] Insig 2 points 1 year ago

Anymore to go around :(

[–] sweetchildintime 3 points 1 year ago

Well, I hope so. However, having been a McLaren fan / sufferer for decades I've learned to manage my expectations. Norris is a really talented driver and deserves a better car. Fingers crossed.

[–] TheYang 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

wait, why was quali today? another sprint weekend?

[–] Flippanteer 5 points 1 year ago
[–] gramathy 3 points 1 year ago

Quali is ALSO tomorrow, just to fuck with everyone

[–] Rob 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Checo is cracking. I kind of feel for him.

Curious to see who they’re giving the seat to; I don’t think they’ll be promoting Tsunoda.

[–] frost_ 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed. I think Tsunoda is great but throwing him into that RB right now would like what they did to Albon, it would be way too soon.

[–] gramathy 2 points 1 year ago

he's had two years, albon was almost brand new by comparison

[–] The_one_and_only 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

I think Tsunoda isn't quite there yet, he's still too rash in certain moments. He has improved a lot, but he still has some way to go before he can get a seat at RBR.

I also genuinely doubt if Checo will be out of the seat. Sure, he's way behind Max, but that would also be for his replacement (as long as it isn't Lewis or Fernando, but they won't sign at RBR I think). RBR is comfortably leading both championships, and they don't have to manage an intra-team battle. Must be nice being them at the moment.

But if they do replace him, I'm putting my money on Hulkenberg. He was also the other serious centender for the seat when they picked up Perez. He is driving very well in the Haas. He will know his place in the team. And to be honest, I just want to see him on the podium one day...

[–] gramathy 1 points 1 year ago

yeah but a better car would give yuki some confidence

imagine Yuki in RB, Daniel heading AT with Liam as rookie driver

[–] Rob 1 points 1 year ago

I’d be very surprised if they’d go for Hulkenberg. Checo was always a stopgap until they could get younger talent into the seat. It doesn’t make sense for them to keep rotating in more experienced midfielders. They’ve already got Max for the experience.

But if anything’s on the table… I think Bottas would be a fine pick. He did better at Mercedes than Checo is currently doing at RB.

[–] AshLassay 1 points 1 year ago

Problem with Yuki is that this year’s car is pretty shite. You can clearly see that he has improved compared to last year. But during race day the car basically drops in performance once they get past the 2/3 mark. Like either the brakes will turn slippery or the tires are gone.

I only was able to watch Q3. I was bummed by Alex’s lap getting deleted but another opportunity for Williams makes me happy.

What happened to Checo in Q2?

[–] woelkchen 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What happened to Checo in Q2?

Track limits.

I already used plural, so nothing to fix.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Couldn't put together a single lap inside the lines. Tough look

[–] melonpunk 3 points 1 year ago

Alex is making this season a joy for me to watch, especially his Quali performance. I’d love for Williams to get a real push forward and give him a better car to fight with.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Another Dutch Sandwich. And, sadly, another painful weekend for Perez...

Good on Stroll for outqualifying Alonso. I admire his determination even though he's being overshadowed by having a legendary driver as teammate.

[–] zav 4 points 1 year ago

Almost missed quali because of the extra special weekend again

[–] baggyspandex 4 points 1 year ago

Get in there Lando

[–] godolphins13 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Trying not to get excited about Ferrari's potential for tomorrow...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

The higher they start, the more potential for a Ferrari Moment ™...

[–] The_one_and_only 3 points 1 year ago

Checho really needs to have a think about how he is going to make his weekends better. This is getting a bit embarrassing by now, not making Q3 for the fourth time in a row while driving the fastest car.

[–] reddit_sux 3 points 1 year ago

The most important thing tomorrow is to see whether Alonso shows the same generosity, that he showed in the Spanish GP. 6th or 7th shouldn't matter right.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Albon continues his mega season. Perez is gone mentally at the moment, don't know what has happened to him over the past few months.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Russel: I overstayed a year or two in Williams, but I'm faster finally.
Albon: Hold my beer.

[–] zav 2 points 1 year ago

I need aston to setup up their Quali pace so that they can actually benefit from their race pace

[–] lurkandtwerk 2 points 1 year ago

This is by no means an original thought—but sprint weekends really do suck.
