Of the people I know who don't like beer, they're almost all sweet tooth's. So if you prefer a sweeter taste on the palate then it makes sense that beer isn't your thing. Even the blandest of lagers is inherently bitter. I don't necessarily think it's an acquired taste, I think it's an acquired taste for people who already like that flavour profile.

Sweet tooth person here and I agree with you 100%.

Beer is such a diverse beverage though. Some stouts and porters are very sweet with a strong chocolate or caramel flavour and barely any bitterness at all. Then there's IPAs where the bitterness is the star of the show. IMO there's no such thing as "beer flavour" as there are infinite varieties of hops, malt and yeast, and combinations thereof.

Dude I love beer in all its forms, and while sweetness is a component in many beers, it's not a sweet drink no matter how you spin it. If you are a person who likes Moscato or exclusively fruity cocktails, beer is going to taste like dirt for you.

Try a milkshake sour. Some beer has completely different flavor profiles than any other.

Sorry, I agree with the person above. I have a sweet tooth and I don't like beer. At all. Even when someone says, "this is a sweet porter with a strong caramel flavor," it is too bitter for me to enjoy. I have willingly tried beer many times due to people like yourself insisting that they know a beer I'll like. Nope. On the other hand, a sweet wine like a port, sign me up.

You could try a nice kriek, those are pretty sweet. Or other similar sweet lambics.

Meh. I used to say the same thing about kale, tomatoes, etc. some stuff grows on you. Beer still tastes bad.

[–] wreckedcarzz 14 points 1 year ago

If you drank kale and tomatoes and they are now growing on you, you might have a slight situation on your hands.

Although, free fresh kale and tomatoes for life.

The first time I tasted beer, I was alone having dinner at a restaurant. I was over 30. There were no peers pressing me. I live in a valley full of Mormons.

Some beers I like a lot, some I don't. I didn't have to acquire the taste. So sue me.

And sometimes a beer that's usually just okay hits just right. I don't think our taste is always consistent day to day.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'd argue its more mental cravings and an increase in perceived enjoyment. Taste does def change just slowly usually.

So liking vegetables is Stockholm syndrome too isn't it?

I feel like you can apply this logic to coffee as well.

[–] z500 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Other things you can apply to coffee:

  • Cream
  • Sweetener
  • Cold

Polished turd is still turd...

You need to try better beers, there is a ton of variety and flavours, and not everyone is going to enjoy all of them. I don't like IPAs, but I love a good Wheat beer.

[–] cman6 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, tell me about the wheat beer. What's your go-to; Franziskaner, Rothaus, Weihenstephaner?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Weihenstephaner is my number one, love the standard and the dunkel. Erdinger is also very good. Blanche de Chambly is quite nice and I get it when I can.

[–] cman6 1 points 1 year ago

Blanche de Chambly... I've not heard of it. I'll be adding that to my list of beers to try - thanks!

I think my taste buds are just changing as I age. There's a bunch of foods that I never used to like, hadn't tried in years, gave another go and now like. I don't think you need to keep trying it until you like it, just that maybe eventually you'll like it anyway.

I say the same thing about hot sauce. Send me your hate, IDGAF!!

[–] FlyingSquid 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't like beer or hot sauce! I'm a rebel!

Furthermore, I also don't like steak sauce! Or honey mustard! Or barbecue sauce. Oh god I hate barbecue sauce.

[–] MeanEYE 1 points 1 year ago

Wasn't Stockholm syndrome fake? I remember reading how it's not a medical condition but some writer invented a name for it and used it in a book or something.

[–] Sterile_Technique -3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

"It's an acquired taste" = "it tastes like shit, but eventually you won't care because you developed a dependency"

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nope, good beer actually tastes good. And I only drink beer at most once a week, so no dependency here.

[–] Mozingo 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

That's weird. I don't have a dependency on blue cheese.

[–] LemmysMum 5 points 1 year ago

You say that, but we both know you'd attack me if I tried to take it from you.
