Can't recommend this game enough. If you haven't played it before, you can get the full game for free, without the new UI, from the bay12 website!

Most people won't gel with the free version though as it uses ASCII.

It's also probably part of your distros libraries. Most distros I've used you can straight up (install command) dwarf-fortress

This is great news! I have always wanted to try Dwarf Fortress but I know myself and I know from past experiences playing ASCII MUDs and rogue-likes that I don't play them enough to memorize what the different symbols represent and that inevitably causes me to drop the game entirely out of frustration. It seems like a small thing, but having the graphical version of the game on Linux is a huge win to me.

DF works on Linux since the beginning.

The Lazy Newb Pack was always available for Linux and through Proton the Steam Pro Version also worked from day one and I never had issues.

It even works with DFhack.

The fact that I've been using Linux for over 20 years and don't know what most of that is seems like an issue...

Nice! I just bought it a week or two ago, so this is fantastic news!

I used to play a bit, but I haven't played in years. I'll have to mess with the Linux version and try it out.

But can this version be played in the tty like the free version?

TTY was great for multiplayer. Instead of handing the save file back and forth, we would just take turns on the server.

You were using cloud gaming way before services like stadia became a thing.

Doesn't look like so in the beta at least, it will always launch in an SDL window - and doesn't link to the curses libs either, which makes some sense with it being a Steam game.
Though using dfhack and the remote interface could probably still be used to have a tty client.

I've recently gotten into this and it's an amazingly detailed game with so many things to offer/handle it's frankly overwhelming.

A native linux version is amazing and will def wait for the release as I've recently started a look run which is pretty good for me,given my limited experience.
