Five people are confirmed dead in the Tampa Bay area due to a rare, flesh-eating bacteria in the waters.

According to Florida Health, Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that naturally occurs in warm, brackish seawater and requires salt.

3 deaths attributed to the bacteria were also reported in New York and Connecticut. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/vibrio-vulnificus-3-dead-rare-bacterial-infection-new-york-connecticut/

Washing your hands after handing raw shellfish Avoid contaminating cooked shellfish with raw shellfish and its juices Washing wounds and cuts thoroughly if they have been exposed to seawater, raw seafood or its juices

Don't worry, soon it's going to be buried in 25 feet of seaweed for the next 1,000 years.

An older guy that goes to my church had this and it almost killed him, got a good part of one of his arms before they got a handle on it IIRC

Vibrio is generally a nasty genus. It includes this, several other pathogens (like cholera), and it also is the likely source of tetrodotoxin, which is used by things like pufferfish and poisonous salamanders.

First malaria, then leprosy, now this. Florida, I’d ask if you’re ok, but clearly you’re not.

I mean every shitty bacteria/fungus/virus that has plagued humanity started in a tropical area. Florida is a subtropical state which due to climate change is rapidly becoming more and more tropical.
