To build on the idea, if a bookshelf doesn't fit the vibe of the area you could use light hitting crystal prisms that put out color, that the party could rotate to get the right color alignment or have them shine their light on the door or a spot on the wall or floor.

yeah, there are rainbow book spines, and you find a little plaque that says ROY G BIV and if you pull the books in order, red, orange, yellow, green etc a door opens -_-
Ugh. I guess you could change the text on the plaque, but still seems weak.
