Idk how long a lot of you have been off reddit but I was there just after Sync for lemmy was announced and it had a lot of people saying they'd come over with Sync. So Idgaf if it's got ads or a premium fee, because I don't have to use it. I can just let the people who want it use it and let the fediverse grow.

Based neutrality.
The only thing I like more than sync is people having the option to choose the app they prefer.
Lack of 3rd party apps is why a lot of us are even here in the first place. The more developers committed to Lemmy the better the platform will become.
Amen to that. Monoculture is bad, in every context.
The Vulcans have it right: Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
I use Infinity for Lemmy and it's pretty gosh darn nice (coming from Infinity for Reddit).
I found it quite buggy. I love infinity, but I'm probably gonna stick to Sync for now.
It's in early development, I'm sure it'll get better. The awesome thing is that we have so many great choices for clients. There's something for everyone!
I don't care, just stop talking about the damn thing.
i dont get it. whats wrong with sync?
People are upset because they want to use a premium service without paying for it. The dev was kind enough to add a free version, which is supported by ads. However, the ads in the free version use trackers (just like pretty much every ad service), so people are getting hysterical that the app is "spying" on them.
It would be one thing if this was the only app for Lemmy, but there's numerous other apps on the market they could use.
Although none of them are even half as polished as Sync 😉
It's mostly foss (free, open source software) linux guys doing what they do: Telling people what software they should use.
The paid version will probably go on sale in a few months. I remember redditsync being $10 or something and I got it for $1-2 on sale.
Edit: and I don't know if sync is on iOS but anyone on an android can download Google play rewards and usually get 1-5 surveys a day and get $0.10-$0.70 per survey. It adds up pretty quick. I get quite a few a day and even more when I walk in areas with lots of retail. If you are willing to share a photo of your receipt it'll give you even more. I've made a few hundred dollars for apps over the past decade using that app. I don't think I've ever paid for an app with my actual money and just used money earned off rewards. If you have an android (with Google services) it should be an app you have.
I use the Google survey thing too and agree that it stacks up pretty fast. I often use it to buy premium versions of apps.
That said, I really doubt the people concerned with trackers in an app would want to willingly give Google information about themselves that they sell to advertisers.
Not open source, payment if you don't want ads. Valid criticisms, but it's still the best app UX wise, by far, so the blame is not on the users, it's on open source projects to do better
I downloaded Liftoff today. It's pretty fancy, and ad free.
For me Voyager marking on read when you scroll past a post is just a killer feature
In case any sync users are looking to enable this: Settings shortcut: History > Mark posts as read on scroll
The fact that you can link to a freaking setting is amazing. I love this app.
And people still think Sync is overhyped. This is pure awesomeness
10+ years working on sync and I only added that last year. Been an absolute game changer for support*.
TIL you can make links to settings by long-pressing them. That's actually awesome as hell.
Jerboa... Always
Ngl, I downloaded Sync just to mess around and Imma be honest. I get why people like it.
Jerboa has been good to me for the past month, but Sync is such an improvement. It has customization options that just make the experience better all around.
I understand why people are complaining about the price but... Based on how much time spend on the app I kinda get it.
Also I just gave Google opinion rewards info on my whereabouts at all times and answered nosy questions which i quickly got 20$+ to pay for the add free stuff.
(Google opinion rewards is an invasive app that asks you stuff and gives you a quarter or so for every questions about nosy things)
Man, I am really out of the loop here. What's happening?
Apparently sync was a popular reddit app (I think, I never heard of it before), which has now launched for lemmy. The result being that 50% of all posts on lemmy is now about sync for some reason.
Guerrilla marketing or just very very dedicated fans?
Long time sync user. It's fans. It's just that good.
The app team is one man: Ljdawson. It ain't guerrilla marketing.
Confirmed.
Big Sync fan here, because LJDawson actually listens to user feedback and implements good ideas.
Personally I'm a Sync Ultra subscriber because I value paying for the support and extra features, and don't mind compensating the app maker for making my Lemmy UX experience familiar and enjoyable.
However, and this is important, do not feel pressured to use an app because it is popular if something does not appeal to you (like the pricing, or paying to remove ads, for example). There are plenty of apps that are free or significantly cheaper, that remain ad free. All of them have merits.
Sync users alone can't fill the fediverse with the content that is required. We'd be extremely stupid to think we were anything more than just another fediverse user. Everyone's contribution is equally important.
Do it your way, or it's just another Reddit.
Also people are mad at the price. Add free on reddit was a $3 one time purchase. It's $20 on lemmy.
I'm slowly coming around. $20 is probably more than the total amount I've spent on apps since smartphones were a thing, but at the same time I want to support a good developer. Thinking about it as $23 total for 2 great apps makes it easier to swallow.
That said. I haven't upgraded yet. Also worth noting my average meal at Taco Bell costs like $15 and Sync hasn't given me a single stomach ache, so there's that.
It's nothing in the scheme of things. I'm happy to pay all day long. I used Sync for Reddit more than any of the streaming services I use, so I'm more than happy to pay. I used sync for 14 years, and have left Reddit since Sync died with the api changes. I'm glad Sync for Lemmy is here now. I'd never understand the hate for choosing a paid for service just because there are free apps out there.
I think app prices are due for a surge. With the cost of living/business increases we've seen since the start of covid, it's inevitable. Unless an app has super broad appeal I think the days of $0.99 niche apps are coming to an end.
As one of the people who came to Lemmy because of Sync, I'd say very dedicated fans. It was hands down the absolute best Reddit app on Android. Still feeling salty about what reddit did, so I followed Sync here.
I choose neither side. I prefer using the free apps, and I'm not sad about it.
Idk man I am using Connect and I am happy with it.
