/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Unpopular opinion: the Spice Girls were mid at best.

Riker still would, of course.

That has to be the coldest hot take I've ever heard.

This meme is great. Thank you OP for the chuckle.

No not really - he got this as well as Riker would in his place.

Dunno if it's my end (using Connect), but no go.

Yeah ... I don't like giving Reddit any more activity of any kind. If I see an image from there that I want to share, I'll download it and reupload it to Lemmy. Reddit links are hideous and any time you directly go to an image link, it draws up a Reddit page to present the image, giving the site another complex hit that forces you to interact with their dumb site. These links are also specifically designed to just mess up any linking to any other service because it forces people to only see the content on the Reddit site and nowhere else.

To anyone reading this ... if you see a Reddit image, gif or webm that you want to share ... download it (or screenshot it) and reupload it and never bother linking the original Reddit link.

(a part 2 I guess, if it's not too annoying?:-)

Also, Reddit may have corporate enshittification, but Lemmy has tankie enshittification, which is arguably far more dangerous to us both. After seeing all the political stuff here before the USA election, promoting genocide bc that would lead to destabilization of Western society, I'm somewhat soured on it as well. I don't know the likelihood, but if I am literally killed in the next several years, shot by either rioters / protestors or the backlash from law enforcement, it will be primarily because of disinformation campaigns on both traditional and social media platforms that are directly and 100% to blame (tbf, probably Lemmy is too small to have had much of a direct effect:-).

And likewise if Canada (and/or Greenland and Panama, etc.) are annexed by the USA, it will be bc the voting populace knows only what the authoritarians have deigned to allow them access to be able to know - which yeah fuck spez, but they do like 1/10000000th of the amount of filtering that Lemmy.ml does. And now even Lemmy.World seems to want to force mods to allow "flat earth" style comments?

TLDR: nothing's perfect. We try to live in spite if it all. But yeah if there's something I can do to be more friendly to people on this sub - I guess those using Connect? - then I will try to do so. Thanks for letting me know if that's the source of the issue for you, bc again with all of the methods I've ever used personally, I'm still not seeing what you are seeing.

any time you directly go to an image link, it draws up a Reddit page to present the image

I'm not sure what you mean - I've not seen that, but mainly bc I never need to actually click those links I guess. Are you also using Connect? In using the standard web UI browser (Firefox on Android), from places like Lemmy (Discuss.Online or others, like here's from Lemmy.World) or PieFed, there is no reason to click any "link" to anywhere - the web UI just loads the image and shows it directly in the browser, both for the smaller preview and the larger full size version (important caveat I guess: if you click the little preview icon it gets bigger, while if you click the actual title itself, yeah that's what goes to the original). Does Connect not do that? Or it normally does that but does not for Reddit links?

Also, I don't think that using Reddit's as an image hosting site like imgur gives it traffic does it? Clicking the link as you are saying would yes, no it's a niche point here.

Much of the content on the internet is extremely ill-behaved these days. Like Facebook and Tiktok where the right click menu is disabled and it is extremely difficult to get those images. Like trying to get that second image from where it supposedly was located would have been a huge waste of time - I've managed it in the past (I... think?) using the Inspect menu and tracking down the original image URL but urg, it sucks. And then even once I get such a thing onto Lemmy, I'll forget and never be able to find it again - okay so arguably my own fault for not setting up an organized system like with hashtags (which Lemmy doesn't natively support) or some such. And even imgur I have enormous trouble trying to get a link or the image for like not the first one in a series of them.

Even links to static wikia like on Memory Alpha have not always loaded for me in the past, like I had to open a support discussion to ask for such to work on PieFed, bc of all the tricks that sites like Memory Alpha do to obscure their image URLs. Nowadays they always work, but this was not always the case in the past.

In that light then, Reddit links to images are among the better-behaved that I've seen? - though it sounds like that's only bc some methods of Lemmy access have already built work-arounds to deal with their shit (similar to the situation with Memory Alpha)? And more importantly, apparently some methods of Lemmy access do not do that?

At least seeing you, with a Lemmy.ca account, having this issue as well convinces me that it's not something that will go away with Lemmy.World's impending update to image handling software (which I thought was scheduled for something like March, April, or May, and might not relate to this discussion at all, despite sharing the word "image":-).

Does anyone have a recommendation for something in Firefox (or at this point, whatever) that will prevent disabling of the right click menu, especially on Android? One of my desktop browser extensions, this one on Chrome for dark mode, was just automatically removed for reportedly having malware injected into it, so goodbye and no more automatic dark mode for me again. The web is an extremely shitty place these days where my own preferences count for nothing in comparison to competing standards and especially the chasing after profits - long ago I held out some hope for Firefox (Netscape Navigator replacement) but that faith has been broken far too many times and now I view it as almost as bad as Google's Chrome (read about the Firefox CEO to see what I mean). At least Reddit doesn't disable the right-click menu as other sites do. Sorry this is probably a word jumble - there are so many factors to this: Connect's apparent mishandling of images from that source, the lack of a right click ability on some sites and/or a method to prevent that, and how Reddit while being worse than some (fuck spez) are still nowhere near as bad as others, though which shouldn't have mattered if Connect would implement the work-around that the web UI uses, which would still deny Reddit counting it as "traffic" iirc bc only the image but not the rest of the page would have been loaded in that case.
