But it still says "1 ignored message" when they say something. I want it HIDDEN ENTIRELY, Discord!

It's called plugins, and it's great. Technically you are breaking ToS when using them, but there hasn't been any crackdown (the betterdiscord team did remove the more 'risky' mods like messagelogger from the plugin store)

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

betterdiscord is pretty bad, try legcord or vesktop

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

better yet use shelter which never breaks

interesting. I still prefer installing Shelter alongside OpenAsar tho

I've been using vesktop for a while an had never heard of Shelter before

It is developed by ex-members of the old Cumcord Team, under uwu.network. - Shelter

Interesting

Can you use them on Android?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

revenge is the only up to date android mod I'm aware of currently. there's also aliucord but it's running an old build (which might be to your taste!)

[–] onyxjet 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Just know that aliucord is experiences some repetitive crashing issues right now. Seems the devs aren't fixing the current app and downloader as they have a new downloader in an early beta. Seems their solution is to just get the new downloader for now lol.

I want there to be a setting.

Sometimes the context of a missing message in a group chat is important.

[–] eronth 4 points 1 week ago

I don't even mind the 1 ignored message. At least it gives me slight context that people are replying to something. I hate that it gives me the little "new messages" indicator on chats when it's only users I have ignored.

Wow. Standard feature of the IRC clients.

What next? Federated instances?

I really, REALLY HATE when the main discussion forum of some FOSS is either Discord or Reddit.

great. can we get actual blocking now? something that people have wanted for as long as the app has been around? 🥲

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

i'm curious, what does the current blocking fall short of?

[–] Yttra 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Well, you still see the blocked message, just not the contents of that message. They can also still see your messages, they just can't react with emotes. This is just feedback I've seen from people who use the feature, as some people (not necessarily me) take issue with these things

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I will also maintain that systems that block someone from seeing your message are simply a way to amplify eco chambers and universally bad. Nothing like being blocked and not being able to respond to a whole chain of comments or they do one witty (wrong) zinger, and block so you can't reply, etc

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Way too many apps implement a hide/mute functionality and then call it a "block", though.

If I block someone, I don't want to simply hide their messages from my view, I want them to not be able to see and interact with mine. It should be a restraining order, not just sticking your fingers into your own ears and shouting "LALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" while they continue to shout slander to anyone passing by.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Pretend you blocked me. Below is sort of what it looks like in their UI. Personally I like it this way.

  • Other user: Heyyy

2 blocked messages

  • Jackby: Good morning

  • Jackby: How is everyone?

  • Other user: Good!

  • This is for group chats. Blocking still prevents DMs.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

They did test it at one point. I got the test. Honestly, I didn't like it--- seeing gaps in conversation that I can't click sucks.

    [–] 18_24_61_b_17_17_4 13 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You couldn't do that before? That's stupid.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

this seems basically the same as how blocking has worked for forever so idk

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It was fairly easy for someone to know you blocked them since they wouldn't be able to react to your messages or suddenly couldn't dm you anymore, I assume that won't apply to this.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

    aye, I suppose that's useful

    [–] toynbee 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've been blocked a time or two on discord. I don't remember the exact message, but it matched what you would see if you tried to message or add a user who didn't exist. I could tell from context that it was a block, but if it hadn't have happened mid conversation I would have thought I got the username wrong or something.

I haven't been blocked in quite a while, so this may no longer be accurate.

    [–] Feathercrown 2 points 1 week ago

    It's still accurate

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

the blocking feature would let the blocked person know when they try to DM the user or react to the user. this "ignore" feature appears to hide all messages and DMs while still allowing reactions

    [–] Konstant 2 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I don't think this is a good feature. If you're going to ignore someone, own up to it and let them know, don't let them in the dark

    [–] balder1991 14 points 1 week ago

That is assuming the other person is interacting in good faith. If there’s one thing the internet is full is trolls.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, that’s a healthy way to handle normal interactions.

However if you are being harassed by someone you don’t want to interact with them.

Often times blocking informs the other user which has been shown to just make people resort to other means.

There is practical application of not responding being better in some situations.

In normal human interaction, be good to each other. Ghosting is awful.

I don’t think this is intended for ghosting people though.

    [–] Feathercrown 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People will use it for ghosting unfortunately

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

    That’s fine.

Those people suck and you didn’t lose anything.

    [–] Konstant 3 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You think it's good to let someone just talking to themselves without warning. You don't do that in real life, why would it be ok in the internet? Just let them know you left, don't waste anyone's time. Everyone talks about transparency but then are ok with being sneaky little fucks (sry can't think of better word) when it's convenient.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

I don't see how it's the same. In real life I could just walk away and be done with it. Online they can just generate another account and insert themselves right before you.

If people could teleport or create avatars endlessly to try to talk to me in real life I would eventually just wear head phones and pretend to listen to them until they got bored.

    [–] dustyData 1 points 1 week ago

    Because online harassment exists.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

But they could make an alt account if they see you blocked them

    [–] surewhynotlem 2 points 1 week ago

This guy doesn't know I'm ignoring him, and it makes me giggle
